1.0 EcoBoost Hybrid mHEV 125

Featured Replies

Hi there, I'm new to the forum and looking to buy my first fiesta and looking for some help/guidance please?

I have read lots about the wet belt ecoboom which was later changed and wondered if the 1.0 EcoBoost Hybrid mHEV 125 is a good engine please? I have seen a 2021 plate with 6k miles which looks lovely but as I say I don't really know much about ford engines or mild hybrid. I will of course be getting it serviced regularly but would appreciate any help.

Cheers Chris

The later 1.0 Ecoboost engines, including the MHEVs have been redesigned and now have chain driven cams, no wet belt.

BUT they STILL have a wet belt driving the oil pump, so it is important to change the oil regularly, using the correct oil AND NEVER use flush.

As the redesigned engine is still quite new, no one has seen any horror stories yet.

Thanks very much, as I say, I have no experience with Ford really so was curious about this particular engine, no experience of mild hybrid either so any help is much appreciated.

The only difference with the mild hybrid is just a larger alternator (generator) and an additional battery under the passenger seat.

The auxiliary belt should be replaced every 4 years due to the extra strain on it from the generator.

Haven't seen any problems at all with the MHEV components so far.

Thanks Tom, really appreciate that

@Chris9181 just remember MHEVs do not have the ability to power the car on EV mode at all.

The MHEV system just aids the engine in what would normally be turbo lag situations and performs Stop/Start quicker

Engine works 100% of the time

Thanks Dave, yes I realised that, tbh I'm not particular after a mild hybrid but most st line trim levels I see advertised, have that engine. I'm assuming they did do the normal 1.0T 100bhp? Not sure how that compares to the MHEV 125?

The 125 is quicker and better on fuel

Yes, but the 100ps version continued with the "wet belt ecoboom" to the end of production.

Oh sorry, I thought they were changed to timing chain in 2019

The change seems to have been mid - 2020. It's a very complicated story which has been covered in detail on other threads. The safest bet to avoid a wet belt is to go for an Mhev, which are all chain. Or you can do an underbonnet check on a car of interest. On the wet belt version the turbo is at the front, under the silver heat shield in the bottom pic, the chain cam is reversed - turbo at the rear.

Another question about this engine since I have the same one...

I recently learnt that some Ford engines, and, if I am not mistaken one is the 1.5 3cyl found in the 150/182 Focus, has combined port/direct injection to deter carbon building up on the intake valves.

I tried to search whether this is also the case with the revised 1.0 but couldn't find any info online.

I guess unfortunately it's not the case with this engine, right?

The revised 1.0 has been already around for few years so I was wondering, how prone are they to carbon build up?
