Rear Lower Control Arm Replacement Help

Featured Replies

An almighty banging coming from the back.  First I though, rear shock upper mount broken but upon inspection today, looks like anti-roll bar has shot down through lower control arm? is that the correct name for it? with rust.

I suppose as I just MOTd and done clutch kit on it, it's worth fixing so, how involved a job is it to replace?  can I do it in the street?  Do I need spring compressor or can I just take the weight with a trolley jack, remove outer bolt then lower jack to get spring out the way?

Also, what is the name ot the bolts (inner and outer) so I can purchase fresh ones? are they Lower Camber Suspension Control Arm Bolts? thanks

Any ideas, thanks in advance.

Has the nut definitely ripped through the lower arm?  Not just come off the top of the drop link?

Looking at that, there's no chance of those bolts coming out easily.  Will need a lot of penetrating fluid, patience and heat.  In theory it's a simple job, but with that amount of rust it becomes virtually impossible.

Inner bolts are eccentric to set the rear toe angle, so 4 wheel alignment should be carried out after disturbing those.

Inner bolts - 1456980.  Inner nuts - 1471745. (I'd probably go aftermarket for these - 2x bolts, nuts and washers here for the same price as one genuine bolt.)

Genuine drop links are laughably expensive now, plenty on ebay under £20 a pair.

Thank you Tom, the nut's still there, rust is my enemy now!  Appreciate the time you've taken for the part numbers, etc.  I've just ordered all the bits on ebay.

I'll give the bolts a shot and if they are solid then I'll run the car into my local garage to get them fitted as I don't have heat or burning gear at the house.

You  will need something to compress the spring. It's quite long when it's off the car. On YouTube I've seen someone using lots of ratchet straps to hold it while it's compressed. NOT TO COMPRES IT. Not sure how safe is that.

Yesterday I was replacing springs on mk3.5 and use compressor for inside of the spring,  got it on amazon for £11, but before using it I had to make it shorter, still it was fiddly job.

Many thanks Zen.  I was looking at my compressors.  OK for front struts but no way they fitting the rear.
