Compression loss

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a Ford Kuga Titanium Ecoboost and have recently had a Service engine now display on my dash, a couple of days later, I started to lose power and juddering. I called the AA and they did a diagnostic test which stated I needed a new coil on the 4th cylinder. After replacing, he did a drop test and the engine was still miss firing. He then said that I had lost compression on the 4th cylinder and I was unable to drive it as it could go into limp mode. I had it recovered to a garage who said I had lost oil into the engine and I was now looking at total engine failure. To replace I've had an estimate of 7.5k. I had no oil warning displayed and definitely no smoke or anything. Has anyone had this, the car us 7yrs old, 60k on thd clock and full service history. I called Ford and they have stated that as its out of the base warranty they have no obligation to help me.  I just don't understand how I've gone from a car that's running perfectly to engine failure. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The car did warn you that there was a problem, but you continued to drive it. Had it not completely broken down, when were you going to address the "service engine now" ?

You don't say what size engine you have but it is very, very, very common for total engine failure of the 1.0 Ecoboost.

Fully fitted new Ford engines are available from a number of high quality independent engine specialists for under £3500, a fraction of what a Ford dealer will charge.

Thank you for your comment, when I looked at the manual it said, service engine now, coincidentally my annual service was due, so drove it but it was only for a couple of days and no more than 30 miles. But understand what your saying. Thd engine is 1.5 ecoboost. Any constructive advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you

7.5k was independent garage, Ford wanted 9k

service engine now,

This is Ford's bad message. It has nothing to do with servicing the car, like an oil and filter change. On some models it actually says "Engine Fault" or "Engine Malfunction" but Ford thought that was like admitting they had made something that was broken !!

The replacement 1.5 Ecoboost will be a little more expensive than the 1.0, but still nowhere near the prices that a Ford dealer will want to charge.

Personally on a 2017 model, I'd just fit a used engine which can be bought for around £2500 and about £1000 to have it fitted.

Thank you, yes we sadly realise that now. It was just bad timing, Service engine now and it was due for a service we mistakenly made a error. Not sure why I'm being quoted such high figures then. 🤔 but thank you for your comments.

Also the 7.5k quoted by an independent garage was for a recon, not new

Call Pumaspeed or e-mail them and ask what they can offer.
