Fuelling issue

Featured Replies

Hi all, this is my first time posting here and I'm not a mechanic so please be gentle.

I have an 08 plate Mondeo 2.0tdci Titanium with a qxba engine which has done 160k, never had any issues with mot's, always gone through and have never had any issues at all with it apart from a crank position sensor, its all original.

Been serviced every 6 months and we've owned it 14 years ish now.

So, the issue is, when driving, it lacks the instant power it once had, my fuel consumption has gone up and if you are at low speed in too higher a gear, it judders/kangaroos violently and stalls, this can happen when turning into a junction too.

I used to be able to floor it in 4th at say 15 or 20mph (I know, lazy driving) and although slow at first, it picked up smoothly, now, it'll just flat out stall or kangaroo...

Fuel economy is also affected, I used to get starship type milage (never heavy footed) and found the car could cruise happily at 70 in 6th and get a journey return (on the trip computer) consistently of around 75 to 85 to the gallon and about 55 round town, usually get 950 odd miles to a tank of fuel so whatever real figures that work out.

Now I'm getting about 550 from full to empty..

So, no smoke from the exhaust, full throttle it sort of surges and the instant fuel readout is all over the place, metal fragments found in fuel filter and nothing comes up on diagnostics, no leaks either.

I've changed the fuel filter, injectors, maf sensor and checked air filter. Cleaned the air intake temperature sensor and the Boost pressure sensor....

I heard of a Suction Control Valve and this can cause fuelling issues apparently and if thats suspect then so is the Fue Pressure Relief Valve and the Inlet Metering Valve according to what I've read...

Can this be the case and can these things cause this sort of issue or am I looking in the wrong place....???

Any help is gratefully received as this is driving me insane seeing as nobody can seem to get to the bottom of it or even suggest what could be wrong....

Apologies for such a long post but I've tried to give as much info as possible so as to give you folks a fighting chance..

Thank you for reading....

Corected my bad grammar

I can offer no help whatsoever, but just wanted to say, for a 1st post, you have succinctly encapsulated the issue really well.  I totally understand the problem you are having even though sadly not being able to offer any help. There are loads of great guys on this forum who should be along shortly with sensible suggestions...

70 litre tank on these I think, so 950 miles is pretty much bang on 60mpg average.  Very impressive for a heavy Mondeo!

Not sure if it's a typo but did you say there ARE metal fragments in the fuel filter housing?  The high pressure fuel pump is knackered if so.

Yes there are metal fragments in the fuel filter, could the hp pump be causing my issues.....???

Yes.

Sadly those fragments damage the injectors as well, forced into them under high pressure.  It's possible the new injectors may also have been damaged now.  The whole fuel system should be drained and cleaned out after replacing the HP pump to ensure there's no metal left in there.

Oh.......

Thats not so good.....

So, at the very least I need to do the hp pump asap and clean the fuel system....

This sounds as if it'll be quite expensive.....

That would be my advice, yes.

You are welcome to try the fuel pressure regulator first as the cheaper & easier option.  But given the mileage and symptoms, I think it will be the HP pump.

Not a fun job and certainly not one I'd envy anyone having to do.

Ok, I'm open to suggestions so I'll probably start here with this, I've a pretty good mechanic so I'll get him to quote me on the parts needed and the work....

Figure that its worth doing as an equivalent new car seems to between £10k and £20k these days and this one is still a sound car and a pleasure to drive, even when its not running as it should....
