MK2 Car Locked Itself, Keys In Ignition, Door Glass Replace

Featured Replies

Hey guys last night this stupid car locked itself with the keys in the ignition. I stopped at a petrol station, got out and opened the flap and forgot my key, i went to open the door to get it from the ignition and the car had locked itself. It was late at night so i decided i had to break the passenger window to gain entry. Does anyone know what could have happened here as my car does not have key fobs or anything only manual locking of each door.

I need to replace the glass as i only have 3rd party insurance, im handy enough to do it myself with a used part, is it easy enough once you remove the door card.

Also guys is there anywhere online that i can buy ford parts?

Does it normally auto lock when you drive away?

Part number for the glass is 1542424.  But it's not the sort of thing Ford keep in stock and I doubt many places will post window glass.  Easier to find a local breakers yard and collect.  The glass is the same on all Mk2 Ka's.  Should cost around £20.  You may also need to replace the plastic clips that hold the glass to the regulator.

It's a Fiat so I'm unsure whether they can lock themselves, I know Ford don't, except current cars, but you need to code that AND have the key on you as you walk away.

Try some of the Fiat 500 (etc) Forums as that's what your KA 100% is based on

Hi Tom many thanks for your reply. It is probably best to find a second hand one like you suggested. I will check out the online parts catalogue and have a look for the clips too.

I looked on youtube for a guide on 'how to' fit the replacement glass. DO you happen to know of a guide anywhere?

It is a basic model and it does not auto lock, it has no buttons either to lock/unlock the doors from the inside. It has no key-fob or central locking, the only thing i touched was the fuel flap and cap so its impossible to see what could have caused this. 😉

Hi Dave many thanks for your reply. I shall try the Fiat 500 to try and find answers. Its a basic car so its  very hard to see what could have caused this.

That is odd.  It's happened to me twice on older cars with faulty door-open switches.  The car would relock if a door wasn't opened within a certain time, so when it doesn't know the door has been opened, it relocks with the key inside.

Newer cars with keyless starting can detect a key inside the car using radio signals, so it doesn't happen with those.

With so few features on the Ka, I'm struggling to understand how it could have happened as well.

With regards to guides, you're better off searching for window regulator replacement than glass specifically.  Here are two videos that show the door panel removal and then how the glass clips to the regulator.  In your case, there should be no need to unbolt the regulator, just unclip the old glass and then slot the new glass into the clips.  (Unless the clips have broken)  There may be better videos available, but I've just skimmed through these and they look pretty comprehensive.

Hi Tom

Many thanks for your very helpful reply. I have watched both videos and saved them too, thanks for posting the links 😉

I too have had cars in the past that lock themselves with the keys inside, fortunately i had a spare key on those occasions. 🙂

Like you i cant fathom how the car could lock itself as its so basic, it has a basic immobiliser but that does not auto lock the doors.

I shall see if i can find other videos too. Ill Search for the fiat 500 too. I saw on the online epc the clip you were talking about, at the moment i dont know if i need to replace it or not. 😉

I found this video for the fiat 500, it shows you how to unclip the Glass from the regulator mechanism. The windows on Ebay have a small hole to accommodate the clip.

Just an update, i managed to get the window fitted so many thanks for all your help.

I still have the same problem with the car self locking, thankfully the windows were open when this happened, i now carry a spare key in my wallet for now just incase.

I read through the owners manual and there is no mention of a self locking feature. I just have a basic key, the manual does say if you unlock using the key fob, it then auto locks if you dont open a door in 15 secs.

Would a Ford dealer offer me advise if i asked as its obviously a serious bad design. I cant find anything on the Fiat 500 either.

Thanks again guys.

Nothing to lose by asking, though I suspect they'll just direct you to the handbook which you've already read.  Or possibly try to sell you a Puma...

I've just thought of something though, if the car is locking itself, it must have an electronic door lock.  That wouldn't be necessary without central locking.  I'm wondering if it does indeed have central locking but the remote was not provided when you bought it?

Which trim level is it?

Hi Tom many thanks for your reply. I may ask the dealer if i don't get to the bottom of this and politely turn down the Puma. I may be passing this onto my daughter  once she passes her test one day so its something i need to resolve.

That's a very good point re the electronic door locking, its 2012 1.2 Studio, i got one genuine key (non fob) and one cheap copy key (non fob) please see my pic. 😉

Ok, Studio doesn't get central locking as standard.  I'm not sure if it was optional.  Unfortunately that solid key was provided with all of them.  Then some had a second solid key and others had a remote key.  So we can't tell much from that.

But oddly there are still 5 electrical pins on the door latch when checking the non-CL part.

I suppose a couple are for door open warnings.  The others may be for some sort of automated locking or possibly deadlocking if the key is held in the lock position?

Not sure we're any further forward, but if you did want to try replacing anything else, I think it would be that door latch module, as it definitely does have some electrical function.

Hi Tom many thanks for your reply. I have been doing a bit of researching and a vin check confirms what you said, it has manual locking system.

I have checked the parts catalogue and the only thing that looks like a likely candidate is the door latch, especially since there is no central locking involved. Also i only have had this problem with the drivers door so the passenger door may not be affected by this.

I have found the part on ebay so i can get a used one if necessary. I see there is lots mechanism and cables so its maybe worth checking everything from the inside of the door, check everything is free moving, no damage or wear and lube everything well.

Remember the old days, to lock a car door you pushed the inner nib down and shut the door, maybe something is causing a similar effect.
