automatic transmission service help

Featured Replies

hi all ive got a 2013 mondeo titanium x sport tdci automatic 2.2 litre estate.

im trying to find a service kit to service my transmission. all the videos and kits on this shows the 2 drain points for the 2 reservours on the bottom and then the filling point under the airfilter box. then the filter in the black plastic filter housing next the transmission. mine has only 1 drain point and hasent got the black filter housing next to transmission. there is a 2 inch round disc with a cross on it with what looks like a locking ring around the edge.

is my filter above this and do i use this as my drain point aswell for the one reservoir next to transmission pan . the second reservoir has a drain plug.

any advice would be great as my oil levels are low as showing a few signs that oil is low i,e jerky gear change jolt between 3 down to 2nd gear.. theres a slight oil leak on transmission pan at bottom so will renew pan and gasket at same time.. would you use a gasket paste aswell does anyone know.. also has anyone heard about this going through the gears for 20 seconds on each setting before service and after ??

Hi aaron, you have the odd one out in the model line up. The info you are referring to is for models that have the Getrag Powershift 6DCT450 transmission, BUT, you have the 2.2 litre unit which does NOT have that trans fitted.

All 2.2 litres have the Aisin Warner manufactured transmission which is a normal torque converter type transmission.

Officially Ford say there is no servicing requirements for your type trans. The filter is contained within the transmission and again no official recommended service requirement

thanks for getting back.. there is a filling point on top and a drain nut at base.. a garage a year or 2 charged me for doing a transmission service nearly 300 quid ..

got the bill in front of me

valvolin syn mst c3 5w-30 oil 6 litres

filters  part no MVATF5L AND MVATF1L  THEN ALSO TRANSMISSION oil again £31.45

bit strange think i need to check these part numbers out as to me doesent look like they did it and just charged me for it.. dodgy ...

i have got some signs of trans oil leaking on transmission pan at seal at the bottom and recently its started to jolt a bit changing down from 3rd to 2nd .  id say my oilks def a bit low..  how would i change the pan and seal to make good.. drain oil from bottom plug change pan and then refill on top plug below airfilter box..

think i need to speak to them about this. thanks for your help bud

That transmission is the AISIN, the garage done you.

You absolutely have the wrong fluid fitted now, you need to flush it out and put the proper fluid in, which is Toyota WS or similar, but check.

You can fiddle it by running the engine and disconnecting the cooler return and pumping out through there, so you get it out of the torque converter, but you have to be quick to power down as soon as the fluid stops

A complete fill will take about 7-9 litres

You can't get to the filter

I would recommend running 500 miles and flushing again, you can get MERCON LV/DEXRON VI really cheap, you could use that as the first flush, then replace with the correct fluid after, there's not a lot in it

He doesn't mention the transmission oil type. And from from a few years ago. Slush box wouldn't last long with powershift trans oil in.

Re read the posts .

Edit, ok perhaps I should re read the posts. Lol

Comma mvatf auto oil what was filled with a few years ago.  So that was pretty much the right trans oil.

Here is the transmission oil type. Note the 2.2 uses a different spec oil for some reason.

You'll be surprised, Wet Clutch fluid will work for a while, then start banging and loosing gears. A bit like what it's doing now.

It's only hydraulics

I'm not going to rise to that👍

So at least the right oil was put in.

Back to his original post. The "sump" not a sump valve body cover leaking can be fixed by just unbolting, clean off old sealant and reseal . Change the oil with the correct spec , top up to correct level and see how he goes first.

thanks for your help chaps.. will def be phoning that garage tomorrow , luckly ive got there invoice right in front of me.. ive just checked my trans plate and yes its a AISIN AW    TF-815C   made in japan..

will reuse plate and re seal and flush oil, been quite a few thousand miles since they cerposedly did the service just hope theve not done to much damage..

thought id finally found a trust worthy garage to use..

aaron - Just to support the above posts 2.2 diesel does not have Getrag Powershift. The filter(s) are internal of the transmission.

You say in one of your above posts "there is a drain plug at the bottom" - A getrag Powershift has TWO drain plugs (very very early manufactured trans, around 2009/2010, even had THREE drain plugs)

cheers trev watched how to do the powertrain trans with the 2 drain plugs for both reservouirs , as you say mine has only the 1 drain plug and a filler on top under airfilter housing.

looked into the TF-81SC TRANS and they recomend oil - gm part 93165147 which is pricy or the ford motorcraft XT-8-QAW.

as ive got a leaky pan il reseal while doing a oil change ... measure how much oil i get out , allow a bit extra for what ive lost . il change oil twice to flush any crap out.. any recomdations for how long i should drive it before i change first fill for the 2nd lot of oil .  is there a certain pan gasket sealant i need to use for trans or is just a standard gasket sealant ok ..

thanks for your help bud

I had the exact same problem got a kit from gsf and was like nope that’s not right. The you tube video attached makes it all seem much easier, although Volvo it’s the same box and no filter change as its internal as previously stated.
