BMAX 1.0L Ecoboost - can bus, crank sensor issues etc...

Featured Replies

Hi.
A quick query.  I'm a retired vehicle tech and trying to help out former customers and friends  with an issue that I believe is a CAN BUS/ wiring  communication issue.
I have little experience in this field and wondered if anyone has experienced similar issues as local repair garages are just running up costs and changing sensors ( crank sensor three times) etc with no success and then guessing with no deep electrical system tests.

Symptoms include  intermittent loss of PAS, engine performance, esp light warning on dash , rev counter  not working. Engine starts and runs but has lost performance. There may be others but I'm attempting to help from a distance and have not personally looked myself as yet but intend to voluntarily run my own tests and checks next week.
I have the fault codes  as follows that the last garage to investigate read on their diagnostic machine.
After this they were all set to change the crank pulley which puzzled me as there is very little to go wrong with a reluctor ring on the pulley and would no doubt incurred large costs as the whole procedure would mean locking the crank/cams in which case it would have been just as well to change the troublesome wet belt, drop sump etc as the car has now covered 90k miles

This is a last chance for the car as it will be advertised and sold as is for what they can get which won't be an awful lot.
Any possible pointers would be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Generic code readers, even the stupidly expensive ones, don't read all of the Ford specific DTC's. You need to use FORScan and a vLinker FS cable if you are to get the full picture.

The "Ux xxx" codes would indicate that there is corrupt data on one of the canbus systems. This could quite possibly be just water ingress to the BCM, or possibly failing solder joints on the back of the instrument cluster.

FORScan (for use with Windows Laptop) : https://forscan.org/download.html

It's what many Ford owners use including some Ford technicians.

vLinker FS, cable for laptop: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vgate-vLinker-Adapter-FORScan-MS-CAN/dp/B0952P4MLP

vLinker FD, for android phone: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vgate-Bluetooth-vLinker-Scanner-Diagnostic/dp/B08H82WC8L

vLinker FD+, for iPhone: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vgate-Bluetooth-vLinker-Scanner-Diagnostic/dp/B08H8JHWP2

Appreciate your reply. Yes needs a dedicated Ford reader I guess to delve a bit deeper. My thoughts exactly regards water ingress they did have water coming into footwell  during the very wet winter we had . Not sure of location of BCM ( or ECU any idea?)  though would imagine its above the "wet" level somewhere. Instrument cluster also crossed my mind little info of problems on web regards Bmax cluster but would guess same as fiesta that I do know  have problems. I did tell them to give the cluster a heavy thump on the top to see if anything came to life as this used to have some affect on the older Focuse's . I'm not going to interfere too much as they have more or less decided to stop spending on garages who are just charging big bucks and guessing. I'll  just run my own checks and see if I can spot something.

Will be up on Ebay soon along with many others with wet belt issues and  with the faults is my guess. I think theyre done with it unless I can find a simple solution. If it wer emy own I would download the software and get a cable and get to the bottom of it.

Many thanks for confirming my suspicions and sending the links. Much appreciated.

Check the continuity of the engine bay harness and engine harness, including earths, you have a damaged/corroded wire somewhere

The Body Control Module (BCM) is part of the passenger compartment fusebox, they are an integrated unit. If you have been getting water in to the footwell area this may be due to a leaking windscreen, or the drain channels of the scuttle are blocked. Either of theses leaks would almost guarantee that the BCM has been getting wet.

Not yet had chance to take a look myself as yet but will be having a close look at the BCM plugs wiring etc. I  find anything Il post it up . Thanks for your response.

Quick update. Have done all I can with visual close checks and my own scan . Nothing jumped out at me basically "U" communication fault codes, complete loss of PAS now . Engine starts with a bit of a struggle but is quiet and smooth so no mechanical issues on that front.

Needs a dedicated auto electrician to trace the fault with some deep diagnostics and load tests on the wiring. I suspect anyone in the know would likely be able to track and fix in no time . My suspicions are either wiring, BCM or ECU Issue. However the owners h
ave had enough and have replaced it with a one owner low mileage Honda Civic which should give them reliable trouble free motoring.
ring.

So the pretty straight and tidy 2013 Bmax with full history is up for sale and will be pretty cheap at around £1200 for anyone who wishes to take a punt and will likely soon turn up on ebay. Vehicle is in Paignton South Devon.

Thanks all for the suggestions and advice. Greatly appreciated.
