Hi Ford guys. 

So I have a question. 

Should I convert to an auto, replace like for like with a reconditioned unit, (BC5 I think), OR just accept fate and have her "environmentally disposed of" which means she is "parted out". 

 

Personally, I'd like to see her go to a "disadvantaged" young 'un studying at a college to fix up for themselves at that paltry amount from the scrappies. 

We're in no real hurry to "dispose" of her just yet, though. Second daughter may return from Dublin and need a car....

 

How hard is the job? I watched two French farmers doing it and it seemed relatively straightforward!

I think it'll be an IB5.  The BC5 was an earlier version.

Converting to auto is a lot of work on a modern car.  Aside from the gearbox and driveshafts, also need to change the pedals and gearshift lever, which also means changing the centre console, removing the clutch hydraulics, and the engine ECU will need to be changed or updated to work with the autobox and TCM.  Can't see that being worth it in time or money on this car.

The only realistic repair is to fit a good used gearbox like for like.  It's not particularly difficult.  More or less the same amount of work as a clutch change.  (And it is worth replacing the clutch while the 'box is off).

Ib5, got it. Explains why you tube searches for the job were confusing! 

Definitely a no go for conversation to auto, just a bog standard replacement.
