Which topping-up oil? - completely flummoxed!

Featured Replies

So, recently got a Kuga with the 2.0 DuraTorque diesel engine.

Handbook says the oil is specification "WSS-M2C913-D"  OK so far.

BUT - over the page it says the oil should be "WSS-M2CP50-A", then says "Engines with Stage V Emissions should use WSS-M2C-913-D".

Sticker on the door pillar says its a Euro 6.2 engine.

Googling "Stage V emissions" (which relate to particle emission) merely seems to add to the confusion' cos it does not seem to relate to the Euro 6.2(which seems to be about NoX). "Stage 5 emissions" came in about 2018, my car is 2019 so it would seem to fit that description.

So where do I go to find out which oil is correct?

Each stage of emissions covers several types of pollution.  (CO, HC, particulates & NOx)

It's just that Euro 5 effectively tightened particulates so far that most diesels needed a DPF.  And Euro 6 tightened NOx so far that most diesels needed Adblue.  6.2 isn't actually a real 'stage', they just started measuring more realistically rather than using perfect lab conditions at that point.

Euro 5 came out in 2009.  Euro 6 in 2014.  Euro 6.2 in 2017.  So your car is definitely Euro 6.2.

There's a minor typo in one of those oil specs.  The P should be a 9.  WSS-M2C950-A is 0w30.  WSS-M2C913-D is 5w30.

I've just checked the handbook and you're right, there's a definite error in there.  They've also made the same error on the page for 1.5 EcoBoost oil.  The top-up section seems to be wrong on that as well.

I believe it should be WSS-M2C913-D for your engine.  Though the safest bet is probably to contact a Ford dealer who can check their electronic systems to confirm the oil type.  Electronic systems can be updated to correct errors, whereas printed handbooks can't.

Thanks for your response Tom -

After a bit of further research I've realised the WSS-M2C950-A (It was my typo earlier!) is 0w-30 which my handbook states is the oil to use in very cold conditions, so I've just bought the WSS-M2C913-D 5w-30 - at least its readily available from Halfords, unlike the oil for my previous Focus 1.5tdci! Should be OK for topups if I need them (sometimes you do, sometimes you don't).

Thanks again - Richard

Just watch the prices, they often sell their oil in 4 litre containers.
