Driveshaft Change ?

Featured Replies

I have a late model Mk2 Mondeo 1.8 Petrol. When on full lock turning right there is a load clunk/clicking sound from the front wheels.

From previous experience I suspect this to be an indication of possible driveshaft failure. From looking at Driveshaft UK it is the L/Hand joint.

So my question is, do I just change the outer or is it better to change both inner and outer ?

Thanks

Hi Paul, congrats on keeping that MK2 on the road! My friend has sadly just got rid of his X plate mk2 to the scrap man. On Mathewson's auction site there's one with an estimate of £2000-3000. Do they know something my friend doesn't? To answer your query...doesn't a new drive shaft come with both inner and outer CV joints anyway?

Or are you wanting to keep your original driveshaft and just replace the CV joint?

£2 - 3000 ? I'd be tempted at that  😀 Your mate should have broke for spares they're getting hard to get hold of.

Apparently the cheaper option is to just change the outer CV, though some suggest changing the full drive shaft.

For the sake of a few Quid I'd rather change the full lot if it easy enough.

I'm guessing it a similar job on Ford's of the same age so wondered if anyone on here had done both to compare ? 🤔

Yeah, he only got £200 for it and it had an mot at that . The most hardest part he'd had to source was a drivers seat as the backs on them tend to break,  (the frame snaps) so if you haven't got a spare and you see one going....

CV grease is horrible and gets everywhere once you open the boot.  I'd generally recommend changing the complete shaft to avoid the mess.  Plus I can't imagine the inner CV bearings are still at their best after 20 odd years.  The main difference in work when replacing the whole shaft is that you'll have to partly drain and refill the gearbox oil, and disturbing an oil old seal could cause that to leak afterwards.  So it's not a simple choice, pros and cons to both options.

I can see the ST200 making that sort of figure.  But the poverty spec Mk1 in white?   It's not even super low mileage at around 50k.

Thanks for that. I will price both parts and compare from there. Then maybe find a You tube video ...

Well , yes Tom, you're quite right, it IS an ST200!

id replace the whole shaft remembering to replace the oil seal at the gearbox as well

Thanks, there is quite a big difference in price but not to extortionate.

I think the full 'shaft is the way to go.

Hi, gearbox oil stinks! and also not cheap, so be aware that when you pull the drive shaft out of the gbox, oil will pour out of it if you either haven't got that side lifted high enough or haven't partially drained the gbox 1st.
