MK4 clutch issue?

Featured Replies

Hello good people!

2011 2.0L tdci Titanium X manual estate.

Was driving fine but couldn't get it in to gear as I turned to get on the drive.

Now on the drive, car starts fine but I can't get it in to gear.  The clutch pedal feels "funny/odd" like it doesn't depress fully.  Goes in to gear fine if engine is off.

Does this car have a hydraulic clutch?  If so, where is the reservoir (right hand drive, UK)?

If so I'll check level - what fluid does it take?

Any other thoughts welcome!

Thank you all!!

These do use a hydraulic clutch.  But they don't have a separate reservoir.  It's shared with the brake fluid reservoir.

Sounds like either the master or slave cylinders have failed.  Would usually recommend replacing the master first as it's on the pedal so much easier to change than the slave which requires gearbox removal.

Though if you can see fluid leaking from the bottom of gearbox bellhousing, then it will be the slave that's failed.  If you do have the slave replaced, it's worth doing the clutch plates at the same time to save future labour costs.

Fantastic, thank you!

I can't see any fluid leak.

Are there any details or drawings as to where the reservoir is on the pedal, I'm finding it hard to find anything!

Also, what fluid is required.

Will this need bleeding etc. or just a top up.

I'm handy with motorcycle but cars are a bit more full on...

As explained above, there is no reservoir on the pedal.  The clutch MC is connected directly to the brake fluid reservoir.  If the brakes work, then it's almost certainly not low fluid.  If the fluid is low, then it needs brake fluid, to the spec shown in your handbook.  (Likely to be DOT4 but I would double check)

The hydraulic system does need to be bled if air gets into it.  But that's likely to be from a faulty cylinder in this case, so won't be fixed by bleeding without replacing the part first.
