Rear end thump / clunk

Featured Replies

Hi wonder if anyone can help  I have a 2017 edge  which has a thump /clunk from the rear it happens when pulling away  and some times when turning this is a intermittent thump does not do it all the time. this had been doing this for about  a year have been on internet to look if anyone has same issue but every one has there own idea from drive shafts to rear diff or all wheel drive cuppling  I.e cluches within the unit worn  I seeking advise to see if any edge owners have had the same problem and to see if they found what is causing the thump I no it can be anything from bushes to mechanical problem any help would be appreciated thanks. Eric

Hi Eric

Have you checked that you don't have anything loose the boot area around the spare wheel?

Also it might sound stupid but are the wheel nuts all tight to the correct torque?

The reason for saying this is that I recently had cause to take a wheel off.

As well as discovering that the wheel nuts had suffered from corrosion making them swell requiring a 21.5mm socket, I found that each nut required a different amount of force to remove them.

Good luck with your search for an answer

Hi yeah I have checked spare and boot well all wheel nuts tight my next task is empty boot remove rear seat and go for drive to see if it gives clearer idea where thump coming from did fluid change  on rear diff few months back no steel bits on filler plug magnet no awd warning lights on driven with awd on display showing getting equal drive on all wheels when pulling away other than that going to keep looking don’t really want to go to dealers pay price of car to  have them say can’t find nothing wrong so if any one else out there had same issue please give me a message thanks

What you could do is have another driver - Find a very very quiet road....You put the rear seats down - Take the parcel shelf out and you get in the back whilst the driver does a bit of driving/braking/reversing.....Get listening to see if you can pin point the noise.

We had a clunking/banging noise on our Fiesta, unsure where it was coming from I did the above whilst putting my hand on the bottom of the car, I could feel it worse on one side to the other, turns out it was the big bush on the sub frame, replaced both bushes and bingo the noise was gone.

That’s my next task luckily I can take back seats out as it’s an edge suv loads of room to get in every corner and centre iv read loads of people pointing to the rear diff and awd drive unit bolted to it but not getting the noise or sounds you would normally get from failing diff I’m hoping it points to a bushing gone or possibly a drive shaft cv joint but that’s hoping iv really never heard or read bad reports or reviews on ford awd system i use to have a 2010 kuga awd never had any problems with it in that department and that had done 70 thousand miles edge only has 42 thousand but can’t really go of mileage only main Issue iv read on edge is fuel tank straps not tight enough causing tank to slide back and forward on pulling away and heavy braking and Ford recommend changing if failed mine are ok

Hi Eric,

Did you find the reason?

My car is doing the same.

Curiously, I could feel this both when pulling away in a straight line and when pulling away in corners.

After I switched from 20" wheels to 18" wheels, I can no longer feel the thump when pulling away directly forward, but I can stil feel it when pulling away in corners (with front wheel turned).
