Auto hold issue

We drive a Kuga that's 4 years old, manual, diesel. Twice today, I've found myself stuck at traffic lights on reasonably steep hills and the auto hold was difficult to release. In all other situations where I had to stop, it worked just fine. 

Has anyone else had a similar issue and, if so, how did you fix it?

    Do you mean the auto hold as in "Hill Start Assist", or as in the handbrake auto-releasing when you start off?

    If the latter, I'd be interested in the answer, 'cos mine never seems to work!
