Purchasing 2015 Mondeo Titanium 1.5 petrol questions pls

Featured Replies

Dear all

Purchasing 2015 Mondeo Titanium 1.5 petrol 158 bhp questions please

Do I need a radio code from private first owner? In case battery dies, now 8 years and 10 months old. Vendor thinks it does not have code with touch screen

Car is nearly 9 years old with 31k miles. Since Ford say change cambelt kit at 10 yrs/125,000 miles I feel I should change belt soonish. Comments please as quotes vary £1500 down to £580 and I dont want a snapped belt

Ford say this model averages 47mpg, do other owners achieve this?

Any other problems to be expected on this 9 year old model

Many thanks for any advice

Anglo Sax

Radio code (if there is one) should have been recorded in the owners documents by the original salesperson.

Hi,

This engine uses a dry cambelt so £1500 would be very expensive.  Around £500 for cambelt & waterpump change should get you a decent job done.

There's no way it'll average 47mpg.  Would expect more like 40mpg in a Mondeo, or less if its mostly town driving.

A 2015 Mondeo should have a Sync system.  There's no radio code for that.

More like 30mpg on a good day.

Figures on the right give real world consumption.

Only when driving it off a cliff 🤣

Thanks all for advice on Ford Mondeo 1.5t petrol 2015 fuel consumption. Car new to me 20 Aug today

I will be VERY VERY sad if my lovely new-to -me 9 year old Mondeo does not give me 47mpg as Ford say it will

My 1995 Jaguar XJ Sport 3.2l manual box 216bhp managed 30 mpg on any long run, just as Jaguar brochure said it would. I met the nice Jaguar engineer who calibrated the fuel trip software

My 2007 Laguna 3 diesel 2 litre 148bhp managed 47.8 mpg on a long run yesterday just as Renault's brochure said it would

(47.1mpg)  but when hypemiling can get 62mpg

Prepare to be VERY VERY sad

How did Renault get such poor official MPG results from a 2.0 diesel?  Is that a Renault engine or made by someone else?

I've had several 1.9/2.0 diesels post 2000 and struggled to get below 50mpg on any of them!  The only exception was the Fiat engine in a Vauxhall Vectra, Z19DTH, which seemed to drink fuel at an incredible rate.  AC didn't work so that wasn't a contributing factor.  Thermostat and EGR had to be replaced.  And it snapped a spring which ripped through a tyre on a the first day I drove it.  The car was only 6 years old!!  Never bought another Vauxhall since...

Lol we usually ask how did they get such good official results! I think the engines were Renaults own.

Laguna was quite a big car by that time, compared to earlier versions, test methodology changed over the years of course, but the official figures used to be for constant 56mph (which usually was the best), constant 75 (whch is illegal anyway) and urban cycle (the worst), so it was take your pick depending on what you wanted to prove.

What you actually got was a different matter. I was quite happy to be getting 50% better mpg than I had from petrol at that time.

Laguna engine 2 litre diesel 2007 to 2012 was a joint venture Nissan/Renault project- achieving 47mpg on a long journey they said. And true in my case with 2007 model.

If Dave T70 is correct that my 2015 Mondeo 1.5 Ford Ecoboost wont give the official 47mpgI will report it here soon and share the misery. But I'm an optimist old git who can feather foot it.  Maybe should have bought a 2016 Jaguar XE 2 litre deisel  163bhp offering 83.1 mpg and IIRC no tax to pay. I wonder how Mondeo compares for build quality and rust resistance

I look forward to seeing how you get on. Most Mondeo buyers went for diesels and the odd media review of a petrol only ever seemed to quote the official figures rather than any actual test results.

First economy test results on the new-to-me Ecoboost 1.5 Mondeo fresh tonight!

Test roads almost flat, 20 miles return course on small A roads, single carriageways but with several roudabouts and stop start T junctions. Computer zeroed, gave at best cumulative 46.4 mpg despite passing screaching ambulance for which I pulled over. Speed 30 to 55mph, in 5 or 6 th gear when possible. Admittedly super granny driving but with WOT briefly to test acceleration in 3rd ( Wide open Throttle)

From this first result I conclude I will expect to better the Ford given figure of 47.8mpg when on a longer run without roundabouts and stop junctions, and where average speed will be 60 or 70 not  35. Next test is to achieve the Ford figure of 60 mpg which is for extra rural or smooth A roads or

So not sad today, but relieved. Apologies to WOT petrol heads for whom this will be v boring.  Last really big car was XJR supercharged manual 322bhp 0.60 in 5.7 secs best MPG 27 on a run but without WOT!

Sounds like a lot of cheating going on there!

I only work in real world brim-to-brim tank averages myself.  Couldn't care less what it'll do 'on a run'.  That's about as much use as telling people the home heating bill is cheap in summer.

Still at 48mpg, that's near my 440miles to the equivalent gallon on my car. 🤣🤣🤣

Yep, tankfuls on a brim to brim basis are the only figures that count, really. "Flash" readings from the trip  computer aren't much use given the degree of error found in most of them.

Agree brim to brim basis MPG is pure fact. Strangley I've found the trip computer readings accurate on most cars. As said in this thread I know the engineer who designed my 1994 Jaguar XJR X300 trip , he would be devastated to hear of cheating suspicions..was proud of his job. So until proven quilty with tank brim later I will assume my Mondeo one is innocent.  'On a run' MPG at least tells you the best you'll get which is good for morale when we all know town driving is going to give only 60% or less and fuel is so hurtful to wallet. Electric cars I know little about except the true cost incudes recycling old battery and tyre abnd brake dust pollution greater due to car weight.

When I achieve or not the 60 mpg Ford claim for Mondeos 1.5t 'extra rural' will report here.

2007 Renault laguna 3 diesel 2litre officially 55mpg but I saw 62 mpg on trip when 27 miles hypermiling which is v boring. My GF beat me in her 2007 Volvo S40 at 68mpg on same route in convoy. Both cars weigh same, both old, both have 2litre diesels, both driven by pensioners!

Hypermilling my Mondeo 2.0 tdci was getting 80mpg on my commute to work. Same with focus 1.0 was 68mpg . Boring as ***** though!

I do not have the petrol version so I cannot help with the MPG but:

No code needed for the touch screen, unless the owner put a lock on it but I cannot see where you can do that on the sync system. I would get the cam belt done, even if it has only done 31k the belt is still old and ford recommend it is done every 10 years. I paid around £600 for mine from Hindley Clutch Specialist (not sure if you are close to them) I found mainstream garages charged over 1k for the same job, so might be worth looking at your local garages.
