Keyless entry door handle not working

Featured Replies

Hi all

I recently noticed that the rear passenger door handle on my car doesn't respond to touch for locking and unlocking.

Also there is a rattle when closing the door that sounds like a connector cable is detached.

However the door does lock and unlock when the other handles are touched.

I would be grateful if anyone could give an informed reply to possible faults and rectification?

I'm wondering if perhaps the previous owner had issue with the door that resulted in them disconnecting handle because it had stopped locking in conjunction with the touch system?  Also if a new handle was required would it need coding to the vehicle?

I should have done something about it sooner. The dealer I purchased the car from offers a 3 month return to base warranty and the warranty company whose deal I purchased with the vehicle only pay £50 per hour labour.

I'm currently waiting for Ford to get back to me in regards to the brake hose recall and I was considering asking them to repair the handle should it need coding?

Thanks in advance Steve

The keyless door handle is just a basic switch.  It doesn't need any coding.

I would agree with your diagnosis that a previous owner has probably unplugged it.

Hi Tom

Thank you for replying.

The million dollar question is why would someone disconnect it?

Another question would be, how easy is it to get inside to take a look?

I've looked on YouTube and have seen videos on how to remove the door card but I couldn't see how easy it would be to get around the window regulator?

Kind regards Steve

You don't actually know that it has been disconnected.

Sometimes the handles get blamed for a parasitic current draw (in most cases it's not the problem) but if it has been disconnected then it may have been to eliminate that as a possible cause.

I don't know how easy access is on the Edge.  From a quick search, it looks like the Edge still uses an older style door with a soft membrane over the access hole instead of the modern setup of attaching the regulator to a solid inner panel which causes extra hassle for removal.

If someone's already been in there, that soft membrane probably wasn't refitted perfectly.  It may also be easier to remove the handle from outside and pull the plug out using a thin loop of spare wire if it's too deep to reach by hand.

Hi Steve any update on your issue was it unplugged or faulty

my two handles on passenger side work but the 2 on the drivers side don’t it’s weird

would there be a small micro fuse for each side ?

Hi Ryan

Not got around to finding the cause yet.

The car is booked in with Sandicliffe Ford the first week in January to have the front brake hoses replaced and I'm going to have a word with them about the door handle when it goes in.

I don't have access to a friendly body shop mechanic to trust opening the door up.

My warranty only pays £50ph labour. So I'm hoping they have the required skills to solve the issue or at least quote me so I can send this into the warranty company first as I shall have to fund the shortfall.

I shall post something when I have anything to say.

Regards Steve
