Front brake

Featured Replies

My brakes went when driving. Were ok, then nothing. There's a very narrow pipe, front right, that squirts fluid out when I pump the brakes. Looks like something has 'blown' off it. I have no idea where it goes to or if it should be 'capped off'. No clue as to what the replacement part might be. The inside of the pipe is only as thick as a matchstick. Now got a warning on dash saying brake fluid insufficient, do not proceed. Thoughts please?

First thought would be "Do Not Proceed"

Second thought would be get a professional mechanic that knows what they are doing to repair the brakes.

Can you post a picture of it?

There's aren't usually any capped off pipes.  Should be two from the side of the master cylinder down into the ABS pump.  Then 4 coming out of the ABS pump, one to each wheel.

My best guess at the moment is that one of the pipes has split at the ABS pump.  If that's the case, a new piece of copper pipe will need to be formed to fit.  And then the whole system will need to be bled through to remove all the air that's now inside.

This happened to me in an MG Midget (1966) in 1982 - absolutely terrifying experience - the pipe connecting the rear brakes burst and being a servo-less single circuit system I was left with a handbrake. Lucky I wasn't going quickly. I'd get this fixed professionally and quickly for peace of mind.
