Ford Ka whining screeching noise when rurning

Featured Replies

My daughter's 10 plate Ka has started to make a whine screech when turning sharp fullish lock.

I've took the car out but I haven't actually heard it myself but my son who sat with her in it the other day confirm it does saying it definitely made a screech high pitch noise when turning when he was in it.

I've checked the power steering levels their fine, it's had new pads few months back and track rod arms.

Any tips things to look for if I whip the wheel off ?

A 2010 Ka should be Mk2 and have electric power steering, so no fluid levels to check.  Unless it's a very late registered Mk1 Ka?

Ahh right my apologies I didn't know, what's the small clear fluid container for top left facing engine ?

Brake & Clutch fluid (shared system).

That is the clutch fluid reservoir.  The handbook is misleading.

Right thanks for that,

I took her car for a spin today sharp turning left right U turns etc but bar one tiny noise it sounds fine to me. She's on holiday so I've been left with the retired dad's job of inspecting.

I'm going to take the wheels off and give it a thorough check all the ball joints arms brakes.

1 last question before I crack on, I did the pads a few months back (I used a drop of copper grease) could it be them say I've not put enough on ?. I'm clutching at straws but it had both wishbones done last year, track rod arms and brakes.

I took the disc out and there's wear on the lip top bottom both sides, is that lip manufactures made ? I can't remember tbh. The 2nd picture is the pads that I installed last time pretty sure from with GSF or Eurocarparts

Honestly, I don't think it'll be any of those things.  My guess would be either a tyre compound that doesn't like hot roads.  Or the electric motor trying to push 'past' full lock at the end of rack travel.

Edit - Blimey, I haven't seen solid discs on the front of any car for years.  I can't see anything wrong in those pictures though.  An old acquaintance of mine works at a garage and never greases pads, reckons they don't squeal.  Personally I use Ceratec rather than copper grease nowadays.  No harm in adding a bit more while you're there, but I'm not convinced that'd show up only at full lock.

Ok thanks for the help much appreciated.

I wasn't sure about the lip on the top/bottom of each pad whether it was a manufacturing spec or not, I just couldn't remember.

I put it back together and take it out again

Thanks for the quick replies

Ah yes, I see what you mean after a closer look.  It does appear that the backing wasn't stuck on squarely at the factory.  Though I don't think it'll make any real world difference, the contact points are still fully covered by it.

I took the car out around the estate sharp turning full lock both ways, U turns but I couldn't replicate the noise both my daughter and son said.

For now the mystery remains unsolved

Well I finally managed to hear the noise my daughter was going on about. After leaving a car park sharp today turning left and not very fast I fully locked the steering and I heard it.

It was like a high'ish pitched whining noise. I wouldn't say it was really loud but noticeable, if you had a radio on you might struggle to hear it but without a radio it was a very distinctive noise.

As I came out of full lock it lessened till I was straight then it went. I had turned full lock left coming out my street earlier but it never did it then. When it made the noise I had it hard over full lock so as not to cross over the white line.

Strange really

That is strange.  It sounds like the ePAS motor.  But the motor turns in the opposite direction as soon as you release full lock so don't think it can be that. 🤔

I've told her to monitor it say warning lights, light or heavy steering but she's 24 music blasting so not sure how that will work
