Weird door shutting sound

Featured Replies

Okay so this is a bit of an unusual question..

I've only had my ST Line for around 1 month, so I'm just noticing little things, and I'll probably have a bunch of questions

but this one is about the doors. When I shut the passenger door (it's the three door version), it closes with the usual solid clunk one would

expect of a good quality door shutting on a modern car. However, the drivers door doesn't make that sound, it makes a very tinny, somewhat

odd sound. How is that possible, that two doors can close with very different sounds lol? The driver door does close properly, it doesn't look

mis-aligned or anything. It has the same trim on the door as the passenger door?

It's as if you had taken all the trim off, and the door now sounds more hollow when you shut it.

*The only other thing I have noticed about that door is that when you fully extend it open to get out, right at the point that it's open all the way,

there is a slight notch and a little creak. I don't know if this is related or not

Could've had a bump and a new door or skin fitted without the deadener pad.

Could have a seal missing

Could just need the latch lubricating

Oh and it will rattle if the glass is down

Is there any evidence of the car having had a replacement drivers door?

It may be that the door has been changed, and some internal sound deadening not having been refitted.

You mean if the deadener pad is missing, there will be a rattle when the window is down?

No

It'll always rattle if the window is down as the pressure is off the window regulator

I think you guys are on to something here because why would the drivers door have that little notch or jump if it was the original door?

Now I'm suspicious that is has been replaced, not 100% fitted back correctly, and has that pad missing. It's the only thing that can

explain that hollow noise when it shuts.

I need to test that then because I've not really had the window down much at all since I've bought it

Put both windows up, shut both doors

From the outside tap the centre of the door skin and see if the tone is the same

If one is tinnier than the other then the pad is missing

If they're the same then either the regulator is loose or the glass is loose in the regulator or the latch is worn

Just tried that. To be honest they both kind of sound the same when you tap on the door, at least, there isn't a discernible difference

in the noise, but there definitely is when you open and shut the doors, so I suspect you're still right about the pad missing.

Is it easy to get the door cards off to take a look?

Guys, there is definitely a damping pad missing from my drivers door, that hollow sound when i shut the door is doing me in now.

Where can I order a damper pad from?

Plenty of choice on ebay, search for "noise damping pad".

Couldn't find anything other than this item, which I'm unsure as to whether this is actually the damper

pad or something else?

I don't think anyone could accidentally leave that whole panel off.

The circular pad covering the window release should be part number 1444258.  Can't see any on ebay, just one here although no picture to confirm.  You can use any self adhesive foam just to cover the holes if they have been left open.  You may even find the pad dropped to the bottom of the doorcard when you remove it.

If you want to damp the actual metal door panel, you'll need something like Dynamat.

You are only looking for a generic noise dampening pad, not something specific to a Fiesta. Try putting this item number in ebay search box: 196694340941

These need cutting to size & sticking to the inside of the door skin.

I think that what you have posted is the inner door seal that goes under the door card, to prevent water getting into the car.

It could be that the door has been replaced, and is not correctly adjusted, either the hinges or the striker plate.

Definitely something has happened with this drivers door because there's a slight notch when you open the door fully extended, like it jumps a tiny bit,

so I would guess somebody had the door off for whatever reason, or replaced it, didn't get it perfect on the hinges etc - also left out the door damper

which is why it sounds like a tin can when you shut it

Quick update on this if it's helpful to anyone else looking at a similar issue -

I had a garage take the door off and re-seat the hinges, which fixed the slight jump in the door opening,

at the same time I had them take the door card off and what had happened is that the damper inside the door had come

unglued, to they glued that back in position and it's all good now. Cost approx £60 which wasn't too bad to get a couple

of niggly issues sorted

Hi, I know this is a few months old now but I’ve finally found someone with the exact same issue as me! My passenger door shuts perfectly lovely thud but drivers sounds just like you described Paul, also has the jump when opening fully wide and doesn’t line up perfectly to the rest of the car… bugged me for ages bought it direct used from ford as well.. I’m going to try taking the door card off and having a look!
thank you for the update
