Ten Year Service

Featured Replies

Hello all, I’ve had my Grand C Max since 2017. It’s now 10 years old so I’ve booked it in for a timing belt change at the garage I bought it from. I’ve not ever had any trouble with it mechanically. Drives like it should. There are some niggles with broken plastic trim and wonky door mirror motors I’m hoping they’ll fix… but what cost should I be looking at for the general service and mechanical part replacements? Anyone had a service like this done in recent times?

Which engine is it?

1.6 diesel manual

If it's a Ford dealership, likely to be around £600 for belt & waterpump change now.

Plus around £250 for 10th year service (oil, oil filter, air filter, pollen filter).

That's cheaper than I feared! Thank you for the info. I had a £2k bill going around my head, so it should only be half that even if the garage is a little more than you say.

I'm actually using a non-Ford garage, but it's a diesel specialist and where I bought the car in 2017. I've been back there for some services between then and now. There's some plastic interior trim that has broken I'd like replaced, and the driver's door mirror's motor has packed up too, so that needs looking at.

I've got what seems to be the common problem of water ingress to the spare wheel well - but apparently that's a simple waterproofing job with sealant? Fingers crossed it comes in under the £1k mark...

You're welcome.  The timing belt on this engine is a conventional 'dry' one and quite easy to access.  The higher prices you may have seen for cambelt changes are likely to refer to the wetbelts on the 1.0 EcoBoost and 2.0 EcoBlue engines.

If you can post a picture of the trim that's broken, we might be able to source a used replacement on ebay.  Then you can either choose to fit it yourself or ask the garage to fit it at the service.  Same goes for the mirror motor, is it the adjustment motor or the folding motor that's failed?  That could potentially be a wiring fault, but hopefully it's just a simple replacement part, again that should be easy to source used.

Regarding the water ingress, I'm not sure if that's the same rear vent leak as on the Mk3 Focus.  If it is then you're right, they just need to remove the bumper, clean and dry the area, apply sealant around the edge of the vents, and refit the bumper again.  That shouldn't take any more than an hour of additional labour.

Oof - going to be £1600. Booked in for five hours with the timing belt and water pump on the list to get done. None of the extras are even taken into account for that - it’s just the full service, MOT and ten year replacement parts. So much for sub-£1k…

Can't see how they've got anywhere near that price.

Independent dealer labour is probably around £80 an hour?  So 5 hours is £400.

Cambelt & waterpump kit around £200.

Service parts £100.

MOT £50.

Did you get an itemised quote?

Managed to talk to someone sensible at the garage today - the receptionist yesterday had guessed at several things incorrectly so told me a load of nonsense.

So far they’ve completed the service and mot but still have the timing belt stuff to do.

Service parts were £100, service labour 2hrs at £80ph, mot £55, then VAT on top.
The belt and pump will be 3.5 hrs labour plus parts at £200 plus VAT.

So no more than around £850 in the end. Literally half what they told me yesterday!

Thanks for your advice and knowledge - made me feel a lot better when sorting it today.

Excellent, that sounds like a far more acceptable price!
