Not sure which way to turn!? Flywheel on the way out?!

Featured Replies

Hi all I used to be a member way back in 2007 and now I'm back with another Ford and have some issues ... Where better than this community !!

2017 Kuga 2 ltr diesel ST line 77k miles.
One previous owner , FSH
Owned it for 2 years now.

I must say I am very happy with the car and is great with the family . Since ownership I've had tyres all round , disks , pads a new back box and obviously service/mot inbetween.

It had its last full service with all what I've just mentioned above July this year (and cost a small fortune!) at my local Ford dealer .  Around two weeks ago I noticed  a 'grumble ' noise coming from the front part of the car , mainly when I creep forwards or backwards , using the clutch . It makes the noise for a small amount of time when starting up and idling as well . I'm not one for sitting in traffic with my foot on the clutch 'riding it back and forth' constantly; I'd say i try and press it least as possible !

However since noticing this grumble noise it has been bothering me and I can  see money signs all the time!! I took it yesterday to my local ford garage and the classic thing where I tried to make them listen out for the noise and it wasn't doing it .  They did phone me later and said they had it up the ramp and still couldn't hear anything .  It was when I picked the car up they mentioned they could hear it when reversing and manoeuvring in the workshop to get the car out they could then hear the grumble noise.

They have basically said it is my flywheel which is on the way out and recommend fitting a new clutch at the same time .

I gave the car a little welly up a hill earlier just to see if I could hear any noises or if the rev needle was flying through the roof , but it seemed to pull like a train without and noises or issues.

I'm concerned if it is the flywheel that it's going to cost fortune , or if it could he something else perhaps  ?  My partner drives the car on occasions and mentioned it was making a noise , which made me realise there is definitely an issue and she usually turns a blind eye to anything !!

Is there a way to find out if it is the flywheel or could it be something else ?

Many thanks for reading!!

Adam

Ps . Apologies for the dirty car!

I drove my previous car (a diesel Astra) for about 2 years with a noisy flywheel, before it finally got difficult to get a clean gear change, so there is some hope that you could do the same.

As your car is about 7 years old, why are you taking it to a Ford dealer? Surely there are some good independent garages near you who would be cheaper?

Thank you for your reply.
Yes , good point . My train of thought is , if it's at the Ford garage surely everything they say or recommend is 'right'.
I'm beginning to now wonder....

OK , so there is a chance it could carry on for a while . Weirdly I don't feel any issues with gear change or pushing the clutch.

I'm going to take it to another garage later . Will keep you posted.

Thanks

Adam

Isn't the best , but I have a short clip of the noise it makes . You can hear the diesel tick over but also a deep grumble noise beneath that noise ?

Another Ford

I've just seen the title of this thread "Not sure which way to turn!" and immediately thought it must be something to do with indicators and BMW drivers 🤣
