2016 Ford Kuga White smoke when accelerating

Featured Replies

Good afternoon everyone,

I have an issue with my 2016 Ford Kuga Titanium TDCI,

When driving it will start emitting white smoke when accelerating and stops when I take my foot off the pedal, I got my mechanic to check it but the 2 times I have gone to see him the problem is not happening. I have no performance loss, Engine management lights or fluid loss that I can notice however I am noticing either oil or diesel fluid residue in the exhaust tips (not the normal sooty residue) so I know once the car is getting hot then this could be burning off causing the white smoke, so I am more concerned with how it is getting there. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated, the car is still under warranty for another 4 months but they want a comprehensive report paid for myself to diagnose the issue before they will pay out, but if I can get a rough idea what to look for then maybe the full report wont be necessary and I can get it sorted sooner.

many thanks in advance

This probably won't be an easy one to diagnose so you may be best off going through the proper report.

Oil can get into the exhaust directly through a blown oil seal in the exhaust side of the turbo.  Diesel can get into the exhaust when an injector doesn't close properly and keeps dribbling into the cylinder when the exhaust valves open.

White smoke can also be coolant burning, and that does feel a bit oily as well, it's not like plain water.

Depending on how often this is occurring, it may also be the DPF vaporiser.  That is effectively an injector and a glow plug fitted in the exhaust.  The glow plug should light the diesel immediately in order to burn the soot in the DPF.  But if that fails then you will just get raw diesel pumped into the exhaust.  However, the DPF regen won't complete in that case, and you should be getting warning lights for the DPF filling up.

Appreciate the reply, It is not happening all the time but once it starts it continues for the rest of the journey I was driving  30 minutes today and it just started all of a sudden but I cant seem to determine if it happens at lower or higher revs if that makes any difference

A bit of an update, a block test has been carried out and no issues found as the fluid stayed the same colour, however another issue has turned up related or coincidence I am not sure. After carrying out the block test last night, it was driven for around 5 miles and then went back to put the undertray and that back on on and notice a coolant leak on the Drivers side wheel and could not determine where it was coming from as all the hoses on the top end were bone dry and the coolant level was still in between min and max and it looked like a significant amount of fluid that had been displaced. Any ideas where this could be coming from
