Auxiliary belt replaced and is now squealing 2017tdci

Featured Replies

I previously wrote in this forum as I could hear a funny noise when engaging a gear. I took it to my local Ford dealer and they said it was a new flywheel needed, so I had a second opinion and took it to my local garage which is family run and they also said I needed a new flywheel. While the car was having the work done the garage phoned me and said my auxiliary belt and tensioner were loose and could do with replacing also. I went ahead with this and had a new flywheel clutch auxiliary belt and tensioner. The car was on around 77,000 miles and has now just ticked over to 80,000 miles. Within those three thousand miles of driving I have weirdly noticed the same noise I could hear when I previously took the car in for what I was told was a flywheel. Nevertheless I've been told I have been over hearing noises since the issue and the cost so I tend to turn the radio up a little bit now... however a noise that I cannot ignore is what sounds like a squeaky belt when I first start the car up and maneuver the vehicle. The noise seems to go after I've started my journey. What could the reason be why my auxiliary belt is now squeaking this never happened before it was replaced? Thanks guys for your help

Has the water pump ever been replaced ?

At 80,000 miles it is certainly due a water pump if not already done, and the fact the aux belt and tensioner were in poor condition suggests that it has not been replaced.

Thanks for your reply.

It hasn't been replaced in my two and half years of ownership, how can I tell if it's been replaced or not?

What are the early stages of it failing, also what could the outcome of a failed water pump?

Many thanks

Adam

It starts to squeal, and sometimes it will leak a small amount. Failure of the pump just results in the engine over heating and eventually seizing up.

I'd say you need a new water pump, and another new aux belt.

Is this 2.0 EcoBlue or 2.0 TDCI?

Hi, it's a 2017 2.0 TDCI St Line.

Oh dear, why would I need another new aux belt?

After driving today with the window fully down and radio off, it seems to squeek when accelerating in all gears.  It isn't really loud, just enough to notice it.

I've not noticed any fluid on the drive or when parked up.

After spending a rather large amount last year (3k+!!) I was hoping that would be the end of the spending... What on average would a water pump and other bits cost?

2017 could be either.  If it's a 2.0 TDCI rather than a 2.0 EcoBlue then the waterpump is driven by the cambelt, not the aux belt.

I've managed to get a video, this is from a cold start.

Please note the fluid visible is because I topped up the washer fluid and it spilt.

Thanks

Wow, that's annoying.

It is definitely a TDCI though.  So the waterpump can't be replaced without doing the cambelt at the same time.  It should last over a decade though.  The belt interval on these is 10 years or 144k miles.

Could be the alternator pulley or AC pulley.  Best test would be to remove the belt and then try it.  If the noise goes, we can be fairly sure it's something aux driven.  If the noise is still there then it's something to do with the cambelt and a much more urgent issue.

Stupidly I was assuming it to be an EcoBlue because of it being 2017 but of course there were still some TDCi around.

Thank you - I'll be onto the garage asap!

Will follow with an update

If the Aux belt is removed for any reason it is never a good idea to reuse it. They are not expensive and it's just not worth the risk of having a reused belt fail shortly after refitting it.
