Thermostat replacement

Featured Replies

Hi guys

I'm thinking about changing my thermostat im losing mpg on a 40 quid fill up worked it out lost about 30 miles.

Only getting 24mpg now in winter.

Can they be replaced without alternator removal or are they hard to do, is a alternator take out easy for thermostat replacement.

It's a 1.6 ti vct.

Thanks guys

Is there 2 thermostat versions for ti vct MK2.

I had feel at the thermostat and it's got 3 tube holes but only the left and middle are connected, with the 3rd one right diagonal one nothing on it.

Why's that any idea

Cheers guys

yep some have a heated stat - senses load and heats to open up quick - the idea is to run hot for efficiency

check in diagnostics - it will throw a code for the heater circuit if its popped - also these ones costs ***** loads - also runs the fan flat out to try and cool down - it doesn’t help in the summer - but it tends to cope through winter

As you live in London, 24MPG seems about right if mostly doing short journeys.

These engines are known for poor MPG.

The E10 petrol also negatively affects MPG.

I have a 1.6 Petrol non Ti-VCT. I average around 80 miles per week with £20 worth of fuel.

This is normally short journeys to and from work. I use around 15l of fuel per week.

This works out to around 25 MPG at current unleaded petrol prices of around £1.35 per litre.

55mpg at at steady 56mph.. average of 38mpg without traffic

I just filled up with fuel this afternoon.

I put in 16 litres after having covered 85 miles since I last topped it up.

This works out to 24.15 MPG.

I have an original Ford brochure from 2005 which gives a factory figure of 32.5 MPG for Urban driving. This is for the both the regular 1.6 and the Ti-VCT version.

Do you have any other symptoms of a stuck open thermostat? The usual one is the coolant taking a long time to warm up.

at 2C ambient, driving gently, allowing a very cold engine to warm (aka less than 2500 rpm and <20% throttle) how far do you drive before noticing

1) any warmth in the cabin - 300m
2) reasonable contribution from the heater - 800m

if its >2 miles stat sounds like its full open

my mpg figures above were the best you'll ever see - not saying many ever mange it

lots of cold starts and short runs in this cold weather will eat 5mpg
rubbish ethanol infected fuel will eat up to another 5mpg

maths says 10% death fuel has to waste 6% more as there's that much less energy pushing the pistons down - but much of what we are getting is "magically" far, far worse than the maths says should be happening - been saying for more than three years ALL my vehicles are using up to 20% more - its like the crims developed utter garbage and your government runs the country of fuel tax - so they are quite happy about it

On my 2005, 1.6LX, I use E5 (BP Ultimate) petrol. On normal, town/rural driving I average 30mpg, and on a long run I can get 35mpg. Its not a very frugal car...

Gauge doesn't move while driving. Standing still it gets nearly up to half way and soon as you drive the temp gauge lowers.  Car feels better to drive when warm up.

Has anyone changed the thermostat/housing without taking out the alternator.

Thermostat been done the old one had no clips on the springs.

What's the optimal running temperature of a ti vct. I'm looking at the dash stalk trick and saw today the engine was 142 but got take off 40 so that was 102 but the thermostat don't open until 98.

Also I can hear my expansion tank cap leaking air.

Cheers guys

I've replaced the electronically thermostat on my focus and red coolant.

It's better then it was but if I remember right the gauge always used to sit just under halfway. It warms up faster but the temperature gauge going up and down from 75 to to just 90 mark.

Any diagnostics I could do like checking pipes or other items please,  I have ford scan and elmconfig.

Any help please.
