'High Engine Temperature' P1299 - Ford Stumped!!?

I'm really really hoping someone could share some light on the issue I've been having with my Ford Focus 1.5 Ecoboost 2017 that Ford themselves after 3 visits cant seem to fix and im at the end of my tether with it.

Back in November my car started to idle a bit strangely, its always sat nicely at 750rpm, but it started idling at around 1200-ish, i didn't think much of it but a week or so later i took it for a drive for an hour and literally as i pulled up at my destination and stopped the car an error popped up on the dash stating “High Engine Temperature, stop safely” the car went into limp mode,  temperature needle suddenly jumped up from mid-way all the way to the top, I called out the AA who run their diagnostic machine, said that the actual ambient temperature in the engine was fine and wasn’t actually overheating and came back with a list of errors P0010 – Power Train, P1299 Camshaft Position Actuator circuit,– they cleared the errors on the ECU, the temp needle and engine went back to normal and escorted me back to my local garage stating that a number of sensors would need to be looked at. I believe at least one of these sensors had oil on it, which apparently it shouldn’t have had, although I cant remember which one off the top of my head – possibly the coolant temp sensor.

Cut a long story short my local garage replaced the Coolant Temp sensor, Air cooler temp sensor and the Camshaft position solenoid. Collected it and it ran for about 6 weeks with no issue, then one day I did the very same 1 hour journey, pulled up at my destination again and bang, there was the same temperature sensor error again!!

My garage have basically run out of ideas and advised me that this could be an electrical related issue and would really need Ford to look at it.

Taken it to Ford, they’ve had it in 3 times in the last month, stating that the ECU wiring had Oil on it and had got into the connectors, which they cleaned up –collected it, made no difference, errors back within the hour! Then they said that the wiring had more extensive oil on it than they originally thought and recommended a wiring bypass, which made no difference, then they stated that the ECU also had Oil on it, which they advised was the problem as they were detecting intermittent low voltage issues that were probably causing the errors, they’ve now replaced the ECU and the wiring, ive collected it this afternoon, within half an hour the temp error was back! So looks like im taking it back to Ford for a 4th time tomorrow morning!

Does this issue ring any bells with anyone? Im concerned about this whole oil on everything issue, surely there shouldn’t be oil on the ECU, wiring or these sensors that I mentioned, this cant be a good sign?? Concerned that Ford are going to bulls*t me some more and blame it on something else tomorrow and try charging me more money so I really want to have some ammunition to throw at them so I don’t get fobbed off again!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can't say for sure on Fords, but Vauxhall/Opel suffer with oil pressure switches leaking, and the oil can migrate through the wiring into the ECU, causing similar problems.

So, it might be worth checking to see if the oil pressure switch is leaking, or has been replaced.
