1.5Diesel auto loss of gears/drive.

Featured Replies

My 1.5 diesel automatic Kuga has has an issue recently where it felt like it was going to stall on pulling away. Took it into the garage on Thursday and they couldn't find anything wrong. Yesterday while driving home from a day out with the wife the transmission warning came on saying refer to manual and we lost gears. AA recovered us and I tried the gears again to park at the garage, no forward and a very jumpy noisy reverse. Anyone have any ideas please?

You'll need (I suggest) to get detailed fault codes (Forscan + lead)?

Is this Powershift (I'm lost off with changes) and if so, when was the oil and filter changed?

If not then I'll defer to experts...

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. The garage checked o Thursday and found no fault codes or obvious issues. I'm not a fan of the modern automatic boxes and with hindsight should have stayed away but too late now. Normally only drive n the D position and leave the s mode alone, but when this issue started I found that sport mode ran smoother as it revs higher before the change up. Never used the paddles on the steering column, never really seen the point. Not sure about the powershift question. Service was completed a few months ago and is all up to date. That is something I have always been on top of, and previous cars used to get oil and filter changes every 7-8000 miles which at the time was every 2-3 months. Not doing anywhere near that sort of mileage anymore though. Hopefully I'll get some sort of answer from the garage tomorrow.

Again, unsure if it's Powershift (don't know if that box ever had paddles) but, if it is, it should have had at least 2 previous gearbox oil and filter changes which are crucial -  any records of that is worth checking IMHO?
Based on other comments on this forum  (I may be the only lover of Powershift!) the other conventional autos are "much better"
Any fault codes (lack of them is surprising?) should be read when they occur as switching off and on can permit a reset.

Depending on the scan tool the garage uses it may still not register official Ford codes (again, often mentioned on here) and Forscan + a decent lead, is recommended. Again, perhaps worth checking as the symptoms do seem quite serious, perhaps requiring a "specialist transmission expert" (good luck on that as they are rare as rocking horse droppings!)
Do let us know progress.
