Exhaust filter, DPF?

Featured Replies

I’ve had my kuga st line x 1.5 eco boost diesel for 12 months, it’s a 22 plate with 13000 miles on the clock - pretty much every few days my dash shows “exhaust filter overload - drive to clear”  I have driven it on the motorway for 40 minutes and that seems to clear it but not for long!  I do mainly do short drives but I had the same driving habits with my last car (Vauxhall vectra 2.0 Sri) and never had these issues???  Any advice?
Thanks

Hi,

If you're only doing short drives on a DPF equipped diesel then I would expect to see this message maybe once or twice a month.  If it really is every few days then I suspect there's a fault somewhere.

Either something causing excess soot, such as a sticking EGR valve, or a fault with the sensor readings from the DPF.

The 2.0 DTI Vectra never had a DPF so nothing to fill up on those.

Only advice would be rev more!

And don't use rubbish diesel. Esso or BP only (normal)

I know there are some people who like to get through the box really quick, thinking it saves fuel.

Don't do that, rev it.

If you're getting a lot of DPF warnings change the oil very often

I would suggest setting yourself up on FORScan and running your own DPF regen cycles to keep on top of it

An equivalent 2022 petrol will most likely have a GPF fitted (gasoline particulate filter), so they may not be much better than a diesel if your drives are very short.

A fully electric vehicle has no exhaust at all, so they are the best option for short drives now.  But only practical if you have access to charge one at home, of course.
