Ford Transit Custom PHEV

Featured Replies

Hi, all,

I am after some advice please.

I have bought a second hand Ford Transit Custom PHEV, and love it, but it is expensive to run, tax and insure!

My question is:

Can I tow a small caravan with this van, being hybrid?

Many thanks

Despite the very many positive benefits of owning such a vehicle, the only downside would be the size of caravan that you could tow. Fortunately Matchbox do a range which should be suitable. 😉

If you look at your V5 (log book) there is detail of the maximum weight that can be towed, showing both unbraked trailer and braked trailer (hopefully your caravan has working brakes)! These weights are what was allocated to your vehicle by Ford when it was built, and should not be exceeded.

A caravan should have a plate on it showing the maximum permissible weight (usually near the door, inside the gas bottle locker, or on the "A" frame). As long as the caravan permissible weight is less (or equal) to the weight shown on the V5, you should be ok.

Thank you 🙂

I have just looked at my V5 and there isn't anything against either braked or unbraked, so does that mean I can't tow?

I will have to contact A Ford dealership, I think. Thank you anyway.

The information you need is on the vehicles VIN plate on the inside door frame. See the example photo below.

  • 1 = Gross Vehicle Mass (Kg)
  • 2 = Gross Towed Mass (Kg)
  • 3= Maximum Front Axel Loading (Kg)
  • 4 = Maximum Rear Axel Loading (Kg)

Thank you, all.

I have checked the plate on my van and it is blank on the gross towed mass.

I think therefore,  I will need to go back to a diesel if I want to tow.

Such a shame, as I do love my van!

I tried!

I just really want this small caravan, I am getting too old for a tent!

Thank you for trying to help me, though.
