Mk8 fiesta steering issue

Featured Replies

My 2020 ActiveX has an issue with the power steering where when you are on a motorway/dual carriageway you are having to constantly correct the steering to keep the car straight. It's not as noticeable during city driving but there's certainly something amiss. I've had the tracking checked and that was OK. The correction required is to the right never to the left, no difference if Lane assist is on. Thanks in advance.

Get the alignment checked on a four wheel aligner, just to make sure.

Check tyre pressures are correct

Ensure tyre brands match across the axles, you'll be surprised what odd tyres can do

Ensure you haven't got a seized front brake caliper or, if you have rear discs, a seized rear handbrake mechanism

Agree with Dave

Had odd tyre pressure on front tyres and made a lot of difference

Also a lot of weight in the boot can also upset the steering

Letting the Mrs. sit in the front passenger seat instead of the boot can help fix that 🤣

Only if they're still alive🤪

Yes me too. When I first bought my car the steering felt fuzzy. But after making sure that the tyre pressures were correct it made a big difference.

Sometimes worth taking to a garage to have tyre pressures check more accurately on their machine. I was using my portable pump and it wasn't very accurate.

Thanks all for the comments, the tyres are the correct pressure and they are matching Michelin Pilot sports on the front and Yokahama on the rear, the issue isn't all the time so I was thinking something to do with the electric motor on the steering? Its going into Stone Acre on Friday for a service and MoT as I am tied into their warranty, I've mentioned the issue but don't expect much.

Have you had just the front alignment checked or full geometry?

It needs to go on a hunter rig to ensure all four wheels are aligned.

I know you can't adjust the rear, but it may have had a bump

Just the front, the car was perfect until recently with no issues. It's not had a bump. I'll see what Stoneacre find tomorrow when it goes in for it's MoT and service.

I've had a weird fault similar to yours.

My front tyres had done 15.000 miles and had 2.5mm of tread left..still legal and plenty of meat.

When I replaced the rears with new I put them on the front being a front wheel drive and the older ones on the rear..

Fault disappeared and drove as should.

I buy tyres in matching pairs on the same axel

Nothing untoward found on the MoT, the car still seems to have a mind of its own especially at motorway speeds which is annoying. Cracking little car the fiesta with some nice features but this is so taking the edge of ownership.

Swap the wheels front to back and see what happens.

If the handling characteristics change, change the tyres

Problem solved, the tyre pressures have been lowered to 33/34 psi front and 24psi rear and the car is back to normal. After driving  at the factory pressures of 36fr 26r when there was some heat in the tyres they were going up at least 3psi each which was causing the steering issue.

Glad you're sorted👍

Well the steering issue has reared it's ugly head again, it's more or less constant now. When parked if you move the steering wheel left or right there is a notchiness to it and it can also seem to stick when going round right hand corners which feels very off putting. The cars going to Stoneacre Ford Doncaster this year whereas last year it went to the local Stoneacre Hyundai where it was purchased as I'm tied to Stoneacre for the warranty.I'll update the findings and the outcome.

Car is in at Ford Doncaster tomorrow, let's see what they find.

Stoneacre reported that the tracking may require attention, I'll get it checked and see if that sorts it out.

  • Author

Tracking checked and it was slightly out, adjusted and it's no better. I did mention resetting the steering angle sensor but was told this wasn't required? The car is still not driving like it should, anyone got anymore ideas before I lose my patience and get shut 😒
