New Car Battery dead?

Featured Replies

Purchased a bew car battery in October 2024, this one: https://www.mymotorworld.com/qh-100-powerbox-premium-car-battery-qbt1003?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAon7BN_V7wtIlSLDgVk6G0nBRBIZX&gclid=Cj0KCQjwhMq-BhCFARIsAGvo0KckoRyuXjdmqp0rqPJUfv1nLM0dr9s14vfGwUcS_YrMH69Gw6Ky1w4aAmvKEALw_wcB

Car is: Focus 1.6 tdci Zetec DPF 110 Bhp MK2.5 Estate, 2010

Previous battery was the original I think (branded ford).

Past few weeks car has been a bit wierd, getting dash lights on, random,  abs light, heaby power steering, all dash power off sometimes as well.

yesterday, luckily car died like this in our drive way, no power, nothing, complete dead, not even immobilser led.

searched on here and and saw it could be the instrument cluster issue, so took the IC out and resoldered the pins, all looked fine under a usb microscope, put IC back in, same thing. dead, no power.

used volt meter on battery, registering at 5v! wacked it on charge, battery charger errored out, check meter and now on 7v, still dead. used a jump start battery pack, that errors out too.

Back in October, I thought it was the smart charging system that was the issue but after changing the battery and using the car daily.

Is the battery goosed? reckon it is the smart charging system at fault? maybe over charging the battery all this time?

thoughts?

Thanks!

Have you replaced all the fuses? Shorts and blown fuses can drain a batteries resources. Even if the fuses don't look blown I'd recommend changing them if you haven't done it recently. I had battery dash warning previously and my odometer stopped working. Turns out the fuse was old.

ahh ok, never thought to change the fuses, these the ones in the engine bay yes? all of them?

Engine bay and passenger fuse box inside. I'm no expert, but if you've got a blown fuse somewhere or a short, then it could indicate that one of your electrical circuits is interfering or faulty. Replacing fuses is quick and cheap. If it still doesn't work then maybe your alternator?

Someone else can advise too, but might have to get a new battery anyway? I think there's such thing as too dead to charge. Chargers won't do it because the battery is too low for the charger to even attempt to charge it.

Battery may yet be beyond help BUT, as you say, smart chargers won't start if voltage too low so  looked at Olde Worlde You Tube video which fooled charger into starting up by putting small 9V battery across terminals to fool the charger into starting up. I can't be responsible for any action you take on that, or not:

Jump starter (unless it has a by-pass switch works in the same way for safety - no over volts/reverse connections or other protections when that switch is used and not all have that feature)

ive alerady started the process, no idea if the warranty is with the shop or the manufacturer.

Shop i would have thought. Unless there is some 12 month rule saying not.

Yes supplier can give extra warranty terms but this usually only covers manufacturing faults (increasingly rare) so Good Luck on that  - I'd expect a test and explanation of their results to prove it is manufacture that has failed in some way, e.g: https://www.tayna.co.uk/tutorials/battery-warranty-information

Would really like to know the results of that discussion!

Hi, it may seem nonsense, but have you checked if the glovebox light goes of when you close it? We had a 2006 Focus MK2 and we've had battery issues three times or so, until we realized the light won't ever go off. We just pulled it out and no more issues. And now this happens in my Focus MK4.5. No battery issues yet, but the light keeps on.

So you saying they can sell you a battery that goes dud in a few weeks then just walk away ? Surely not. I thought that under consumer law the retailer was responsible for the first year then manufacturer after that if they have supplied battery with extended warranty.

If the failure is not due to manufacturing defects then they would be perfectly within their rights to refuse, based on their terms and conditions which you accept when you purchase. They may offer a different warranty but that would have to be checked, carefully in the teeny print!
Generally, I have found that manufacturers offer 1 year and suppliers offer more.
Otherwise a user fault, like rapid discharge, over current or other abuse, discharge to zero and high rate charging etc etc, all beyond their control would then be covered.
For reference, our original Ford battery had a 1 year warranty (even though Ford new car warranty was 3 years) when the battery failed (they tested it) and we were forced to buy an identical new one (we did get a part contribution when we complained) which had a 3 year (limited) warranty, again, against manufacturing defects.
I agree that you (and I) expect the battery to reliably start the car for whatever the warranty period is, but that's not what a normal warranty covers IMHO - always willing to see other, better warranties or find out differently (suppliers may replace if you make a scene or are big enough but that's not what I can do!)

Law (Consumer Rights Act) only covers 30 days in which you can claim it's not fit for purpose or not of sufficient quality. After 30 days you're relying on whatever written warranty you have. Even with warranty, they can refuse and say "take us to court if you don't agree"

You're (we) are always on borrowed time with batteries (we are very unlucky!)😉
