Bought Fiesta 1.0 - bad choice ?

Featured Replies

Hello everybody,

recently i bought used Fiesta 1.0 mk8, year 2019 with 60 000 km. Today i had my tyres changed and mechanic told me there have been some issuess with this model, specifically with its wet belt. So i went online and did some research and now i am horrified to see the engine apparently not being very reliable long term.

Now, i dont expect it to last more than 200 000 kms, my original plan was to have it maybe around 5 years ( i drive no more than 15k kms a year) but now i am super scared and wondering if i should just sell it asap.

I am aware now it has bad engine design but i do take care of my cars with oil intervals once a year and i would be even willing to change the belt right away, if i knew i can just put this out of my mind.

Honestly, i dont know what to do and if some of you that have these cars could share your experiences and advice i would be grateful.

Buying the car isn't a bad choice. It's important to buy one with a full service history using the correct oil and to have the wetbelts changed by ten years old or ideally at about eight years. If in doubt of the service history I would have the work done early. I've changed the oil and filter on mine every six to nine months from brand new and have just had the belts changed at eight years old. The old belts came off "like new". I have the old belts here and they look perfect (cambelt and oil pump belt) apart from being coated in engine oil. Note that if your engine has the turbo around the back of the engine rather than at the front then you have a timing chain and not a belt. There would still be a belt on the oil pump but these seem to be less troublesome.

We keep getting surprised but as far as we know the revised engine only appeared in the Fiesta from around mid-2020.

My daughter took over my old Fiesta 1.0 ecoboost from me and it is now 11 years old. Being no mechanic I told her to get an oil and filter change every year and ensure the garage used the correct grade of oil. When it was 9 years old she had the timing belt and oil pump belt changed and oil filter cleaned. She has had no problems with the car over the 9 years she has had it. I have now had 3 1.0 ecoboosts with no problems.

It appears even with these engines serviced correctly and changing belts at the correct interval they will serve you well.

I know a couple of people who have had Mk 7 ecoboost cars from new, with no problems and had the belts changed at around 9 years and all is well. I had a Mk 8 1.0 for 5 years from new with no issues before moving to my current car.

The key, as Matthew and John mention above, is correct and regular servicing. I don't know if it is the same where you are, but here in the UK Ford changed the service recommendation for the Mk 8 from the previous annual service to 18,000 miles/2years whichever first. Most people on this forum seem to have stuck with annual changes, as did I.

You don't mention what the service history of your car is, but might want to base your decision on that, and particularly whether it has had oil changes at least annually.
