Mk 5 fiesta power steering pump replacement

Featured Replies

Hi, my 2005 1.4 Fiesta is making noises when the steering is under load, and the garage said the power steering pump will need replacing at some point. It's not gone yet but is on it's way out and garage have quoted me £300 to replace.

Is it a job I can do myself with a reasonable amount of mechanical knowhow? And is there anywhere better than ebay to source one? Do you think it's worth buying used / reconditioned or better to go for new?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

The PAS pump on these is fairly easy to replace.  It should be manageable for a DIY mechanic.  The Fiestas don't use the awkward single use pipe like the Focus's do.

It looks like ebay is the best option for a replacement.  There's plenty of choice on Autodoc but all more expensive.  You should also buy a new stretch belt to fit with the new pump.

Used is too much of a risk at this age.  Reconditioned or new would be better, as long as you make sure it's got at least 12 months warranty in case of manufacturing defects.

Awesome, thank you!

I have painful memories of doing this exact job THREE times on the same car in less than a year. First reconditioned pump failed in less than a week. Second reconditioned pump failed after ten months. So I gave up and bought a brand new pump which was still working fine three years later when my daughter sold the car.

BTW. The OP's 2005 Fiesta is a Mk6 not a Mk5.

Thanks, looks like I'll be going for a new one then!

Are you sure it's a Mk6? The info I found said Mk5 is 2002 to 2008 + Mk6 is 2008 to 2016? Happy to be corrected!

In the UK and Ireland I'm 110% sure it is a Mk6, in fact it is very nearly a Mk6.5

Fiesta model numbers in Europe are one number behind from the Mk5 onwards.

There's some very confusing stuff in online look up tables on things like parts sites for example.

UK/Ireland were in line with Europe until the Mk 4. When this received a significant update in 1999,  we referred to it as a Mk 5, while Europe simply considered it as a facelift (or Mk 4.5).

The model numbers have been one out of step and confusing UK/Ireland owners ever since!😀

(A very similar thing happened with the early Mondeo, so we're one ahead with that also.)
