Hello Everyone,

I am a newbie. Just got myself a lovely 2015 Fiesta Titanium X, after always having Peugeot 107's. While travelling to work 6 weeks ago I managed to roll my Pug and write it off. The good thing to come out of it was I found my current Fiesta.

It has been well looked after, has a FSH and drives like a new car. I have quickly fallen in love with it.

The only thing is ..... I have now read all the negative comments on facebook about wetbelt issues with these engines! This has made me a little concerned. Have I made a mistake buying this car? I hope not because and am thrilled with it so far.

Would welcome comments and advice from anyone about these lovely little cars.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best Wishes, Martin

Hello Martin and welcome to the "The Ford Owners Club"

Before we terrify you to death, can you confirm that your car is a 1.0 EcoBoom sorry EcoBoost ?

  • Author

Hi, yes I can confirm it is a 1.0 EcoBoost.

Then unfortunately unless you have absolute proof that the wet belts have been changed in the last year, you need to get them done NOW.

Price at an independent specialist is about £1000 or at a Ford dealer about £1800+

firstly i would do some research and see if the dealers have a full breakdown of the service history and see if it has been replaced.

Thanks for that. I have all the stamps in the service book, I will contact all the garages and see if I can get some background. One of the stamps states timing chain, but it is only hand written and I have no receipts to prove otherwise. 😞

Sounds a little suspicious. Needs investigating further.

Definitely need to contact that garage and ask them to confirm the job.  It should still be on their electronic system.

Also ask them why they'd write chain on a car that only comes with a belt.

Thanks for all your advice! I can't believe I have bought a really nice car and now need to spend £1000+ just in case it blows!!! FFS!! Has anybody managed to get a refund based upon this? The garage I bought it from didn't mention anything about this.

Why would the garage mention it?  They're in the business of selling cars to make a profit.  They don't make £1000 profit on 10 year old Fiestas so they're not going to offer a free belt change with every one.  They also aren't under any obligation to offer a refund or return as the car is not faulty.

If you can check with the garage that supposedly changed the 'timing chain', and they say it must be a fake stamp because the car has never been to their garage, then you've been missold the car and have grounds for a return...

I contacted the garage and this was the reply. Not very helpful.

To be honest I would not trust Kwik-Fit with something critical like wetbelt replacement on a 1.0 ECOboost (I would not let them even touch my car).

I suggest to have both wetbelts (main wetbelt and oil pump wetbelt) replaced and the oil pump cleaned or replaced at a reputable garage that has experience with this job.

The car has been manufactured at 24-11-2015. The official replacement interval is 150.000 Miles / 10 Years (whichever comes first). This means that based on age the belts should be replaced on or before 24-11-2025. However history showed that quite a few (especially low mileage ones) suffer from wetbelt failure before the 10 Year mark. From this point of view it is best to replace the wetbelts rather sooner than later.

To be fair the replacement of the wetbelts is just regular maintenance. You bought a car that officially still has 8 Months left before the wetbelts need to be replaced. You can not blame the seller because the wetbelt was not due to be replaced at the time of sale. In my opinion you should have done your homework before buying the car. There is a lot of information available about these engines and its weaknesses. The doubts about a possible previous replacement should have been reason to negotiate a price reduction or replacement of the wetbelts.

I don't believe that is true.  They are just unable to provide the previous owners name & address due to GDPR.

I have the full dealership service history for both of my cars from before I owned them.

However, as above, there is no way I'd trust Kwik Fit to do a wetbelt change.  So I would treat it as not having been done anyway.

I assume that should be 2025?

Indeed

Thanks for your reply. I plan to contact my local Ford dealer this morning and arrange to get it booked in. I had an AA inspection carried out before buying but nothing was highlighted about the issues with these engines.

Best to have a very large brandy and a sit down before you call them. 🙁

A good, Ecoboost specialist should be able to do an excellent job for around £1000. Shop around, there are those here on the forum who can probably recommend a garage near you.

Coincidentally just spotted this garage in Norfolk while searching for something else (which I didn't find lol):

Someone may be able to comment, but they seem to be saying the right things on their site.

Thanks for that. I have contacted them and they have quoted no more than £1400. That's better than over £2k at main dealer.
