Mk 7.5 Oil pooling on top of engine cover????

Featured Replies

i've seen some posts about this in the past, is there any conclusion as to where the leak is likely to be or could it be from various places and just pooling in this position???

Bellow is a photo from an old post, this is where it is pooling on mine but not this bad atm.  I cant see oil pooling anywhere else and my oil level is ok atm.

Engines done 65k  Could it be coming out from under those bolts?

I had the same with mine. It started to collect oil there when the car was about three years old. I've just had the wet belts done at eight years old and it's not leaking there anymore for the moment at least. I have previously tried to tighten the bolts but it didn't help at all. All I can assume is that during the belts change a new gasket has been fitted somewhere.

Rocker cover replacement needed around £230, try give the bolts a tighten possible vibrations possibly loosen it but most likely replacement

Typo

Actually after looking online it’s a lot cheaper than in thought so win win 😀

With the well on the right you might reasonably assume oil might be coming up the around the bolt and depositing itself there. However, this wouldn't explain the one in the middle. I think the issue here (and on others - I've seen this area photgraphed a lot) is that the cover cracks ever so slightly in that area and with it being in the firing line of the rotating wet belt gets a continuous soaking of oil which ends up finding its way through. I wouldn't suspect a failed gasket in this instance as you'd have oil appearing below the cover around the engine block and not on top.

If my suspicions are right then a new cover would sort it. However, if opting to go down that route I'd first take a gamble at filling the wells with RTV/silicone and seeing if that alone might be sufficient to stop the oil from seeping out.

(Edit: Just re-read and see you've used someone else's photo. In that case the above might not apply)
