Mk7 1600 zetec in a mk5

Featured Replies

Hi peeps,

Im looking for some advice. I have a mk5 fiesta 1600zetec fwd hot rod. I’m looking at putting the fiesta mk7 1600 engine in. I know people will be saying it’s not worth it ect ect But this is a track car and we can only use 1600cc engines with limited engine specs and with the 1600 se engines getting harder to find now we want to change things up.  So with the mk7 1600 being near 120bhp and the mk5 at 103bhp we are looking at doing something different. I know that the gearbox on the mk7 is cabled and want to put a mk5 gearbox on as it’s better for ratios for different tracks is easier for us as we know what diff and ratios we are using. The wiring is not an issue as we run cut down wiring looms anyway and most of the auxiliaries are taken off. Are all the shafts the same that will go into the mk5 hubs ect. Engine mounts not a problem as we can make them. Is there anything that we need to change or modify to get a nice fit. Any information or suggestions would really be appreciated as this is something that we want to do to be different and bring the formula forward.

cheers

You can either use a Fiesta MK7 or Focus MK3 Sigma 1.6 TI-VCT engine.

The Fiesta was available with either 134 BHP and 118 BHP.

The Focus MK3 was available with either 83 BHP, 103 BHP and 123 BHP. The 123 BHP version is different from the 83 and 103 BHP versions. It has a different exhaust manifold with twin catalytic converters. Because of this the 123 BHP version is much better tunable than the 83 and 103 BHP versions.

Both the Fiesta MK7 and Focus MK3 are CANbus controlled vehicles. To make these work with the original (Fiesta MK7 / Focus MK3) electronics you need at least the PCM (ECU), BCM (Body Control Module) and IPC (Instrument Cluster).

Be aware that these vehicles have the gear ratio's programmed into the PCM software. Using a different gearbox with a non standard gear ratio will cause the engine to go into limp mode. This however can be solved by a custom remap.

Another possibility is to use a standalone ECU. Combined with different camshafts, motorbike throttle bodies and a decent custom remap this setup can easily get you to over 150 BHP.

If the regulations allow a turbocharged setup you can also consider a 1.6 ECOboost from a Focus MK3.

Hi mate thank you for the reply much appreciated. I don’t really know much about the mk7 engines really. The engine codes we are allowed to use are Mk7 Fiesta 2008-2017 - HXJA/HXJB -1596cc. If this helps with anything mate.

See the technical specifications of the different engine codes below:

Focus MK3:

All of these engines have the exact same bore, stroke and compression ratio.

On most of the more modern Ford engines the engine code is printed on a paper sticker on the timing cover. On engines of this age this sticker is usually unreadable or no longer present which makes it quite hard to identify the engine without paperwork. The engine serial number matches the last 5 digits of the VIN number.
