Engine cooling fan question

Featured Replies

Hi,

My 1.0 ecoboost engine cooling fan is acting different.  I bought the car as my first car in April 2024. For about a month or two of owning it, the air condition/engine fan would constantly run when the climate fan was on with A/C selected, it would then go off 30 seconds or so after turning off the A/C. The A/C worked fine. Now, a year later, I never hear the cooling fan with the A/C. I have had the thermostat replaced in January this year, but the fan stopped running months before that. I do still hear the fan occasionally, when the A/C is on full speed, it blows really really loudly for 5-10 seconds, but it is a different noise, so I wasn't sure if it was the same fan. It of course also runs for 5-10 seconds when the engine starts exceeding operating temp.

So yeah, engine temp is fine etc. I have tried so far:

Checking all fuses relating cooling system/fans

Disconnecting, waiting for 15 mins and then reconnecting the battery, but nothing seems to work. My friends fiesta does the same as mine used to (runs when A/C is selected)

The A/C seemed to work better when the fan would run constantly, it felt a lot colder. If anyone knows anything about this please let me know!

Your Air Conditioning system (NOT Air Cooling system) is very low or even empty of gas. This is a frequent problem when the AC is not used all of the time. The gas in the AC system contains a lubricant that keeps the many seals moist and helps prevents leaks.

You need to get the system regassed. Then when the AC works the cooling fan will start to work as before.

And leave the climate control on "auto" to keep the seals lubricated in future.

So is it best to keep AC selected all of the time? I presumed it was the other way round and the more the AC was used the more gas it was use up. I don’t really know how it works tbh.

I've always done so in cars with a/c and never needed a regas. There is the mpg argument which has been ongoing for many years but I've never noticed a significant difference and mpg is affected by so many factors anyway.

Keeping a/c selected is also a safety aid in preventing windows steaming up in colder weather.
