I have a bit of an issue with the "inlet & outlet" Cam shaft covers, at the drive belt end.

Each is secured with 3 small bolts,  with an electrical connection at 12 oClock.

Apparently there could be a small oil leak, the required "part / seal" is required and a fairly hefty cost for replacement.

Watching a strip down and re-build (video) I can't see a small cover, like the one's shown, be there to hold oil.

I have no idea what the two plugs are for, so I ask if anybody can put me right as it seems odd.

Those are not covers but camshaft actuators. This engine has TI-VCT (Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing). The actuators are able to rotate the camshafts in relation to the camshaft pulleys. This way the system is able to advance/***** the timing of each camshaft based on actual requirements like RPM, engine load, etc. The system is even capable to recycle exhaust gases (cylinder scavenging) which removes the need for an EGR valve.

The actuators are powered by oil pressure. The electrical connections are needed to control the position of the camshaft. Inside each actuator there is a solenoid that is controlled by a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signal.


The actuators have a rubber seal to prevent oil leakage between the actuators and the timing cover. These seals are an integral part of the actuator that can not be replaced separately. Failure of these seals however is extremely rare.

Internal failure of the actuators however is more common. This usually results in the oil being forced through the electrical connector. Sometimes the oil is even forced into the wiring.

Wilco. Wow, that is some answer, I must confess most of that is way over my head. 

But the electrical manipulation of an independent cam shaft really does seem a new kind of "electricary".

So when the engine is running is hp oil actually up against the cover or is the seal attached to the large casing. I have been told the seal (not sure which one) could be slightly visible, like a profusion ??.

Sorry to show my ignorance, my last two cars were Discovery's, loved it doing brakes & replacing timing belts etc... not a mechanic though.

These are a hole new ball game, I'm hoping the warranty won't fight it.
