Tyres

Featured Replies

I have got to the point where I need to replace all four tyres, I have looked on here and whilst there are a few threads on tyres I couldn't find any about particular makes etc.

I have got the original Pirelli's at the moment, Ford have quoted me for Nexem ones which I've never heard of.

What experiences have people had with other brands in regards to noise stopping in the wet etc, I haven't bought tyres on over 25 years! My old car was an Explorer and I had the tyres replaced free of charge by Ford and then never wore the new ones out.

I know they have to be the 105 w/y's I thought about Bridgestones or sticking with what I have, they're pretty much the same for fuel, wet and noise ratings.

Thanks for the help.

Why would you get a Ford garage to quote you for tyres ?

Black circles or ATS etc, put your reg in, make sure they're the right size and buy the one's you're happy with. (Best cost vs best performance)

Or, just simply google "tyres"

I guarantee you will pay 1/2 what Ford have quoted you👍

Halfords mobile tyre fitting is very competitive now, unless you have a good local garage.

Nexen are used by a lot of main dealerships, including Ford & VW.  But I don't recommend them.  While the performance was actually decent in the wet, they wear quite quickly, and have cracked up badly on a car with low use.

Just make sure that the fitting centre knows you are coming on the day as if they close early, the system doesn't know that.
I look for the best braking/economy ratings for the price I am prepared to pay (always budget) and never had any problems but I'm hardly a Man Racer!

It was in for service and mot so they highlighted it and automatically gave me a price etc, it's just a brand of tyre I've never heard of.

Thanks for that, that was what I was after as not knowing the brand it gives me an idea on what they're like.

The price given for the nexen's were around £186, for £40 more I can get the same as I have, the Bridgstone's were slightly less than the Pirelli's but still good on economy etc.

I'll give them a look, Thank you.

Ford use them in bulk because they get a good deal on them, not because they are a good tyre.

Personally I like to use Pirelli or Goodyear but everyone has their own preference.

Use Asda Tyres online and get a quote.

https://www.asdatyres.co.uk/

I’ve just changed mine for Goodyear eagle F1 Asymmetric 6.
Supposedly better rating than Perrelli. Returned better fuel economy on a run to Cornwall.

I put Pirelli Scorpions on mine. Supposedly low surface noise, but didn't really notice a great deal of difference from the originals.

Bought them through Asda, just over £900 for the four.

I remain to be convinced that expensive tyres make a fantastic difference to just about anything.
If they have the lettered EU characteristics of  Fuel use Wet grip and Noise I'd expect both at A and low noise but for our car you can have a Michelin at £157 (C fuel, A wet grip, 71 dB) or No Name (Fronway) £56 (C fuel, B wet grip, 70 dB NB. 1 dB is insignificant)

The difference between wet grip grades is 3m an average car length but if that's what you are relying on to avoid an accident, it's too close for me!

However you can spend as much as you like if that's what you want.

Would you think that a difference of 3dB would be of much significance ? 🤔

As you know sound is measured in dB, which is on a logarithmic scale. So for every 3dB change in sound level the loudness will either double or half depending on if the number has gone up or gone down.

A tyre with a sound rating of 73dB is twice as loud as one with a rating of 70dB.

It's a largely pointless test anyway.  It's measured via 'drive by' from several metres away outside the car.  Most people tend to drive their cars from inside, not outside.

The braking tests aren't that comprehensive either.  You'll find some tyres can brake well in a straight line on the wet, but add the smallest amount of steering input and they'll become uncontrollable.

The ratings are also only done on brand new tyres.  Real world tests have shown that many cheap tyres lose their decent ratings quite quickly as they wear, but branded tyres remain controllable down to about 3mm.

I’ve just replaced our front tyres with Hankook, £340 the pair fitted inc vat, running continentals on the rear but would highly recommend the Hankook tyre.

Hi All

My Edge came with continentals all round

When the time came I changed to Bridgestones, as my local (trusted) tyre dealer explained to me that the Continentals were of a softer compound than the Bridgestones

Not much difference in tyre noise, but lifetime of Bridgestone tyres was a lot longer in comarison to Continental tyres in my opinion

Happy Motoring

Dave

Mine are black with a nice tread pattern. Last time it rained, on braking they stopped the car without killing anyone - highly recommended,,,

Fully understand the branded tyre thing but to balance the discussion my choice of tyre in the past 16 years of driving has without fail been the absolute cheapest brand new tyres I can find from the likes of BlackCircles, Asda, etyres, national, local tyre shop etc etc.

Do they make Edge sized tyres in really cheap brands?  I would have thought they'd be a minimum of midrange at that size.

No idea on brands, just sort by price low to high when I'm looking... quick look and there's Waterfall, Accelera, Radar all for £85-£95 per tyre fitted. Previous cars have all had smaller tyres so definately budget tyres

Do not buy (unknown) budget tyres. It's not how much do you want to save, it's when/where do you want to stop, especially in the wet. I have seen a test where a budget brand (possibly Landsail) stopped in Double the distance that a premium Conti and Bridgestone did! 40m vs over 80m in wet from 60mph. 😮

Remember Performance is desirable, Stopping is essential!

Landsails are presumably designed to glide over water, it's literally in their name! :whistling:

Tyres are also only half the story.  People with slow reactions won't be able to hit the brake quickly enough to avoid a collision regardless of the tyres.  Reaction times and observation should be retested every 5 years imo.

Bought the cheapest for the last 16 years and not gonna stop now unfortunately... forgive the pun 😉😄
