New brakes

Featured Replies

Hi everyone never encountered this before so I'm looking for any advice

I recently replaced all of my pads and discs on the car at my regular local garage we have done about 500 Miles on the new brakes everything is bed in quite well and works ok I noticed today however coming back from about 100 mile trip out dry day but there is a band of rust going around the outer edge of the disc that does not seem to be clearing from breaking by the pads does this mean there is possibly a problem where the pads are not making contact with the disk and if so is there a potential fix for this problem Thanks for any advice 👍

Needs investigating !! 🤔

Is it only on one brake disc or are all 4 the same ?

It's normal to get a band of 3 - 4mm on outer edge of the disc that the pads do not touch, but in your photo it looks more like 12mm.

You need to take the caliper off and check the pads are correctly seated, and that the caliper slide pins are free to slide and not bent.

NEW Discs and Pads - check discs are correct ones (diameter wise) - check correct pads fitted = something is deffo not right

300mm discs fitted in place of 278mm originals?

  • Author

Thanks guys for your comments it's helped confirm that I do need to take it back to the garage (that I do trust always been good to me). And just to add this is only happening on the passenger side front all others seem to be normal. As far as the size of the discs and pads go I bought them my self and asked the garage to fit them because I wanted the pagid brand as there have been good on my other cars. I checked a few times when I bought them because I found it odd that the front discs are 278mm and the rear 280mm but when I collected them it was  clearly labelled on the box make, model, year and axle so all seems good. Once again Thank you all for your advice, I am new to owners clubs and I find this really helpful 👍

That is not possible. 300 mm front discs do not physically fit between the 278 mm brackets.

It is much more likely that the sliding pins are binding. In that case the sliding pins and bushings need to be removed, any dirt / corrosion needs to be removed and finally the bushings and sliding pins need to be installed using the correct type of lubricant / grease.

That throws a different light on the matter if it is only on the one front disc.

As Wilco says, does not sound like a very good reassembly of pins etc has taken place

The correct lub these days is Ceratec, Not Copperslip
