C max 1.6 tdci dpf question / exhaust soot

Featured Replies

Hi.  I was under the impression that a 64 plate 1.6 tdci would have a dpf fitted - happened to observe that my rear silencer was full of black soot and also under hard acceleration there is abit smoke from the rear , performance is not at all compromised.  Every car I have seen with a dpf has always had a "clean" rear silencer pipe?

Either it has had the DPF "deleted" and the core removed or it may be cracked?

Suggest checking DPF  pressure and if very low, especially at 3000 rev/min, obviously there's no filtering going on (as per your dirty finger test) so you'll need to investigate and decide if a replacement is necessary:

If it has been deleted I would imagine that a previous owner would have had it "mapped out".  Where would I see it cracked if this is the case ?

Thanks

Do you suspect it has been "deleted" which can cause multiple issues, is it a recent purchase with no history, any fault codes or differential pressure reading at idle and 3000 rev/min that should indicate what is going on although your finger test is a pretty good indication that something is wrong)?

I believe that it is deleted from the software and either opening up the DPF and removing the core or being brutal and simply poking it until there is no filtering being done?

Of course, this is a UK MOT fail!

Jimmy is my Go To for all things DPF (he doesn't do forced regens unless absolutely necessary - causes very high temperatures, perhaps leading to cracking and he swears by the finger test)...

It was purchased around 6 months ago or so, I know it had a new EGR valve and a years MOT on it before I got it.  If the DPF has been correctly deleted from the car due to it causing issues previously then it won't bother me.  I've never had a DPF on my previous diesels so I don't feel the need for one now - more  expensive nonsense to go wrong at the end of the day.  On another note the car does perhaps feel quicker than the standard 115 or so bhp as standard

It won't bother you now but if it is producing too much smoke (as that year needs a DPF) then it will (should) fail the next MOT smoke test.

As long as you are prepared if that happens?
DPF problems are usually caused by some other fault (it's usually the victim rather than the cause)

If that happens that I will Nedd to stick a new DPF on obviously but can't understand why it passed the last MOT ?  It looks like YEARS of soot in the pipe, my 1.8 tdci Mondeo is non DPF as standard and I'd say the rear pipe on that is cleaner.

Well, thanks for that info (agree exhaust pipe with DPF should be clean as otherwise the particulates are not being trapped.)
As long as you know that there may be a problem come MOT time and that it is likely illegal now.
Do come back if you get away with it 😉

I will update later in the year.  Certainly not pursuing it for now.
