Gearbox service question

Featured Replies

Hi guys

My 2017 (40k) had a full service and gearbox service back in 2021, just had a quote from Ford for a 8 year major service which includes a gearbox service for nearly £1100......pretty sure I paid about £650 last time,  The car is now of an age where I don't mind getting the service itself done by my local trusty garage ( £350 -  I know I know I could do it myself or get it cheaper but I trust them ).   However, they weren't so keen to service the transmission.

Is this a specialist job that only Ford can do? e.g. are there any software resets/special machinery required to remove all the fluid?  I am waiting for a Ford quote for 'just' the gearbox service, but wondered if I should be able to take it to standard garages and get it done to the proper standard , any seals etc.( I am a bit paranoid due to stories about failing transmissions so promised myself I would get it done to recommended service intervals ) . Any thoughts on what to expect to pay at an independent? ( Colchester Essex area )

You have not said what trans you have - If I am guessing right you have the Getrag Powershift DCT450.

There is a specific way to replace the oil and external filter. Just go on You Tube and search "Ford Powershift Oil Change"

Here is one specific link and although he sounds a bit iffy at times he does know his stuff as he runs a fleet of diesel Ford Taxis

Trans oil and filt should be every 37,500 miles or 3 years whichever occurs first

When you take the filter off, leave it to drain down then carefully examine it for signs of cream coloured miniscule bits of plastic, if there are any it is the first signs of the front clutch breaking up

Labour time is around just over an hour. Its the price of the genuine oil and filter that bumps it up, dealer cost before covid used to be around £350

Thanks Trevor - what's the easiest way of finding our which transmission I have?

Look at Alan's video (he's knows what he's doing) Look at the top of the gearbox and compare to his video AND don't pay stupid price for oil and filter:

There may be even cheaper versions but I've always used that.
2017 may be a later version and unsure what is required with that. If you come back you can ask others what is needed for that type of transmission?

Mike, if you have a diesel engine and its an auto, then it must be a Getrag Powershift.

Also a powershift has an easy change external oil filter - a torque converter type trans does not
