I bought a 2014 ford fiesta ecoboost back in February this year it's got 25,004 miles on it theni find out it has a wet belt on it  and to be told by my local furrows that's it's £1200 for the belt alone  is a major shock does anyone have any suggestions where to get a cheaper priced one from please

Hi,

This is a critical engine component.  You need the job done properly, not cheaply!

£1200 is a decent price if that's from a Ford garage.  Won't get it much below £1000 even at an independent garage.

Do make sure that quote includes the oil pump wetbelt and cleaning of oil pump strainer at the very least.

Edit - After re-reading, I think there's been some miscommunication.  The belt itself does not cost anywhere near £1200.  That must be including labour for replacing the belt, but presumably doesn't include any additional work.

If that is a price from a Ford dealer to replace the wet belt, I'd say it was a fantastic price 🎉

Of coarse as you rightly point out Tom, that is only part of the job. The wet oil pump belt also needs to be replaced at the same time. The oil pump and strainer need removed and cleaned, or in many cases actually replaced. Some garages also like to replace the water pump when doing this work although personally I don't see the the need on this particular engine.

The usual price for the complete job at a Ford dealers ranges from £1700 to £2800 depending on where in the country the dealership is, and how much of the work is needed.

The lowest price I've seen from any independent garage is £700 for the just changing the wet timing belt and nothing else. Most independent garages will do the full work for around the £1100 including cleaning the oil pump strainer.

I (usually) get an independent garage (family member) to service / repair my car;

however

if I was getting a wet belt replaced - and knowing the problems wet belts can and do cause - I would be almost certain to get Ford to do the work unless the price was such that I just couldn't afford it.

Not saying Ford will do a better job than the independent garage, but you have confidence that it is approved Ford parts, done to Ford's procedures, by Ford trained mechanics and signed off on Ford paperwork.
