P244A / P2002

Featured Replies

Morning,

Would very much appreciate some insight please. My 2014 (119k miles) CMax is now displaying the two below fault codes and goes into limp mode after a couple of minutes of driving:

P2002 -Particulate Filter Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1

P244A - Particulate Filter Differential Pressure Too Low Bank 1

Have within the last month had the DPF regenerated by a local garage and until this week the car was running really well. I have also had a specialist diagnostic which stated that the car was mechanically very sound so am keen to keep her for as long as possible (within reason)

Before I take her to a garage I wondered if anyone had any suggestions please as what to check for or whether is worth taking her for a long drive in third gear or using FORscan to do another regen (as I don't want to do more damage)

Not sure if relevant but also took her into Halfords this week for a brake check and they advised that the battery is failing the drop test so not sure if that would have any potential bearing on the above..?

Many thanks

Welcome!

You are always living on borrowed time with batteries so if it is starting to fail then (even though I'm a tightwad) consider changing it.
Low voltage can cause all sorts of problems.

I'm thinking of making a template for DPF problems as it comes up a LOT on here and there are multiple threads!

I'll start with the minimum...
DPF is usually a victim not the cause. so I'm not surprised the issue is back after a forced regen (which IMHO are to be avoided due to the very high temperatures) as it doesn't look like the initiating  problem.
Then, my usual question as I don't know the intricacies of each model...does it have a vaporiser (common fault and if it's not that, it's something else that may be more difficult to find unless there's a Ford specific code showing  - read any codes when the light come on, don't switch off as they may clear)?
Then I'd say checking DPF pressure differential at idle and 3000 rev/min with Forscan as you say is THE indicator of DPF condition.
The I'd point you to Jimmy's channel where you'll find the very poor knowledge of most garages and his processes to sort things out:
https://www.youtube.com/@ORileysAutos

Only concern is that the DPF pressure is too LOW as indicated, then check the exhaust pip by wiping your finger inside (another Jimmy trick) if this is seriously black  AND the differential pressure is very low and doesn't increase with revvs then the DPF may be cracked (forced regen?)

I know I'm getting boring but the above would be my starting point and you can come back when you've checked and considered that and tell me I'm wrong!

Thank you so much for the reply - yes the car does have a vaporiser.

Am off to change the battery now otherwise I'll not get round to it and will go through your suggestions

Much appreciated

Just an update for those that might have similar issues

After changing the battery I took the car to a DPF Doctor who advised that the hoses by the DPF had melted so they are being changed as I type this.

They also mentioned that the DPF isn't performing as it should (and may need replacing down the road) as the pressure should be 6 at idle and 30 at cruising and mine is registering 2 at idle and 20 at cruising.

Obviously don't want to replace the DPF as is costly s any guidance as to any possible fixes or workarounds would be great

Many thanks
