Hi All,

Let me introduce myself, over many years I've owned all sorts of Fords. Mainly Fiesta's (Including Zetec S and ST3), two Kuga's and a 1998 Ford Focus as my first ever car after passing my test!

Now, I'm currently looking to terminate my current contract with Renault, coming back to Ford and looking to buy a 2018 ST-Line X Ford Focus outright. According to the advert however, it uses a timing chain. (I've attached photos!), would someone be kind to confirm whether this is indeed the timing chain or the wet belt?

I've also attached a couple of photo's of my lovely ST. (God I miss my ST)

Yes but what??

We can't tell you about the engine fitted to the vehicle you're buying until you tell us what the engine is??

But if the first two photos are of the car you are buying then it's a chain cam drive with a wet oil pump belt

Oh for f**k sake, sorry! 😄It's a 1.0T, 125PS sorry my brains not engaged at the mo!

It's done 76K miles, would that be an issue at all for these or are there things I need to look out for?

Gearboxes are a weak point, make sure the gearbox and clutch performs 100%

Ensure engine has been correctly serviced as it's still important for the wet oil pump belt

Make sure everything works as it should

Anything in particular I should be looking for in terms of gearbox, clutch performance?

I will be scouring over it's service history meticulously for all servicing, more so that wet oil pump belt. When ideally do they need to be replaced?

And I will do, I will be listening, test driving and making sure all is working as intended. With regards to the timing chain are these considered more reliable than the wet belt set up?

To be safe you should think about changing it at 8 years or 80,000 miles which ever occurs first. The maximum age is 10 years but many fail before then.

Right, so as this car in particular is at 76K, it sounds to me like it's due if it's not already been done.

Some time later this year or early next year would be the preferred time.

It costs about the same as having a wet timing belt changed because the timing chain has to be removed to get to the wet oil pump belt. Expect to pay around £1000 at an independent garage.

Welp, I'm going to look to purchase the car. I'll use the info to my advantage and say that if he wants a deal, to get that belt done.
