Radiator fan not Running even when Ac command on

Featured Replies

Hi  guys  wondering if this has happened to any other Ka plus owner.

Radiator fan not running even when Ac is activated in cabin.

Checked fuses in engine bay and the relay too. All good and current reaches  fuses and relay. With engine running coolant temperature sensor seems to be okay ..

Have I missed a Fuse or Relay some where on the car ?

Getting worried it might be the ECU?

Any help or hint  would be most Appreciated..

Many thanks

Hi,

Ka+ is a fairly rare model so I'm not sure what type of fan setup it uses.  If it's got a conventional relay then it probably has a conventional resistor as well.  Likely to be mounted on one corner of the fan shroud.

Have you tested the fan motor with direct 12v feed?  They do wear out or seize up eventually.   Wouldn't expect it to be an ECU fault myself.

Hi , yes Radiator fan runs when powered directly. And also when relay bridged.  I also swapped Fan relay for known good one, radiator fan didn't run.

Not sure if my Ka plus has a Radiator fan sensor or module

But I do know when Ac is switched on and blower fan is on high..

Radiator fan should be Running.

And it's not..

This is why I am considering the  ECU.

Unless it is the coolant temperature sensor a possible intermittent fault ?

Weird  thing is temperature gauge reads  within normal specification.

When engine running and car driven in traffic

No EMl light , no Missfire and normal level of water antifreeze fluid  in expansion tank

If you can think of anything else  that might help me get to the bottom of this Perplexing Radiator mysterie.

I would appreciate it very much.

Thank you for your time

That's easy to test. Just disconnect it and see if the radiator fan comes on after a couple of minutes.

So that would mean that 'if' the fan was running then the engine would be getting over cooled. Why do you want the fan to run when the engine is just a normal temp. ?

Air conditioning   not working.. when commanded on.

My Ford ka plus..only has one cooling radiator fan.

One fan does both engine cooling and ac condenser Radiator cooling too.

Therefore  when ac is commanded on the one and only cooling fan

Should be on and Running  to cool ac condenser Radiator.

Which sits in front of engine cooling radiator.

One cooling fan cools  two different radiators..

Weird , thats how it is ..

Has the gas been checked? The compressor will not run if the gas is low.

Have you checked the resistor yet?  That was the issue on one of my Fiestas.

Hi , where is the resistor ?

I have looked  for a Radiator fan switch/ module..

Non on the Radiator ..

I've just pulled the Coolant temperature sensor plug with the engine running..

Radiator fan kicked on

Engine ran like a bag of nails then cut out ..

Now have Eml light on dash.

So I'm now more confused is it Coolant temperature sensor or the ECU being Fault?

Many thanks for your assistance and advice .

Its that rusty bit down at the right hand corner though you may have a different type. I have been trying to get a replacement resistor (mine is in much worse condition than the one in the picture!) but I couldn't find one on EBAY without buying the whole fan assembly! I have a Fiesta 2010 1.4 TDCI

Actually I did see this on AliExpress. £4 ? I ordered it but not arrived yet. Anyone know how I can test it and my old one on the bench?

So you have confirmed that:

  1. The ECU is not at fault. It does command the radiator fan on if it loses the temp sensor.
  2. The radiator fan can, and does run and is not faulty.

So it's now time to get the gas checked in the AC.

The AC system will not turn on, or run the radiator fan if the gas pressure is low.

The EML will go out after the temp sensor is reconnected and the ignition is cycled.

It's just a resistor so resistance test will work.  Though I just bridged the plug on mine to make the fan run at full speed.  I had a slightly different resistor to yours though, mine was a barrel shape.
