Engine malfunction warning

Whilst accelerating up a slip road a ‘clunk’ noise was heard from near the front right wheel, then the engine malfunction warning appeared on dash, ac was on at the time.

After stopping clear fluid was dripping from near the front right wheel, turning engine off and then restarting cleared engine malfunction warning, when pulling away the engine had poor performance as though it was struggling with the extra load. Managed to get car home by driving at low revs. I’ve checked the ac compressor clutch spins freely and the pulley rotates with engine at idle, there did seem to be moisture/fluid on compressor, alternator producing more than 14 volts. 
Could the ac compressor be failing and causing these symptoms. TIA
