Question about pipes in the engine bay.

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. I've recently acquired a tourneo custom limited 2.2tdci. it has the rear fans/heater controls. Weird thing is, there's 2 pipes coming from the heater unit in the boot, which run under the car and come out in the engine bay, and noone seems able to tell me what they are/do. I've got a friend at ford who I've sent pictures and she's been great but the diagrams she has to work with are.... A bit naff. So I was wondering if anyone could help?

I *think* they are some kind of heater pipe, presumably to take water to the heater at the back? No hot air comes out of the blowers in the back when the engine is hot so I'm assuming no water getting there, but I can't find anything under the bonnet that seems to be missing. Photo attached. Many thanks in advance!

Hi,

They are as you said, coolant pipes for the rear heater.

This diagram shows the front connections.  The heater hoses that you can see in the middle should have extra take-offs coming from them lower down.  I suspect one of two things has happened here.  Either the hoses have been replaced with new ones, without the take-offs.  Or someone has just cut the take-offs down and then blanked the end with a plumbing fitting.  The only reason I can see for doing this would be because of a coolant leak on the rear heating system.  So if you do want to reinstate them, it's likely to need more than just a couple of hoses.

The heater hose part numbers appear to be 1778195 & 17774143.  Though only one is available on ebay, and doesn't have a picture to confirm the extra take-off pipe unfortunately.

Thank you very much for the info. Just so I cant check/orient myself with your image, are the hoses coloured blue and orange the 2 hoses from my picture? And the two fatter black hoses in the middle of my picture should essentially plum back onto those blue and orange hoses via connections that are now blocked off? As from the diagram it seems the fat rubber pips are going to/from the dash board controls and matrix etc.

If that's right ill try and get under the bonnet this PM and report back.

And yes, I strongly suspect the same, there's a leak somewhere.... but we plan to semi convert it/use it for long trips etc so it'd be good if it worked for drying wet children lol.

Many thanks again for the reply.

Yes that's right, blue & orange are the metal pipes.  It is an awful diagram but if you follow the dashed lines you can see the fatter hoses are actually T shaped and go to both the dashboard matrix and the metal pipes.

Thanks, will check this PM, I had a look in the same place you did, I think it's these pipes? 18427B and 18427D on the image? Which should then be the T to go on to the pipes so depending on what's occurred with them I might need those as well.

Will come back later if that matches what's under the bonnet!

Thanks again.

Just to come back on this for anyone curious, my one has the 2 middle pipes fitted. I believe from the very helpful reply it needs the outer 2 (18472b and d). So, I guess next step is purchase the correct 2, fit and test the system. I can only assume it was bypassed due to a fault as I can't think of any other good reason to replace both pipes with the "wrong" ones for this specific vehicle. So I shall be prepared to have the vehicle off the road for a few days so I can either identify the source or the leak, or, having found it, decide the previous person had the right idea all along.....

If it's of interest I'll post the outcome whenever I get around to it.

Thanks!
