Strange noise

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a deep sounding noise which I think is coming from the backend (cue the jokes haha)

Starts when I get to about 59mph.

Any ideas what this could be?

Possibly just a wheel bearing starting to wear out.

Could also be the rear diff though.

Yeah that was my thoughts.

Car has only done 60k, I am hoping/assuming the rear diff is unlikely and just the bearings.

Booked car in on Monday and will see.

Have you tried going for a drive but leaving the mother in law behind? solves all sorts of noises. 😂

reminds me of the vw advert..

It's an Edge

60k is very rare for wheel bearings, unless you've got spacers on the wheels

It's an Edge, suspect the diff

Took the car to the garage.

They Found nothing wrong, had the car all day and a number of people checked it out.

They stated that the car in great condition and nothing needed any work.

Very odd but happy that the car is safe to drive.

Will see how it goes, just has a aggressive grumblenow at 50mph onwards

get the tyres checked. could be dried out or distorted. its amazing how a tyre can sound like a wheel bearing.

Yep, I asked them to check the tyres, they said they totally fine. Good tread no feathering.

I've had this twice in the 135000 miles I've done in my Edge. On both occassions the mechanic reported the rear tyres as uneven wear, sort of like a castle wall blocking. In both cases I couldn't detect the issue but in both cases the issue cleared up when new tyres were fitted.

What I don't know is why this is happening on different makes of premium tyres (Nokian and Veredistan).

The last noise I had that seemed to be coming from the centre of the vehicle was the auxilary belt tensioner pulley tearing itself apart (5000 miles after the belt was changed)! Found that out once it shed the belt :(

Got all 4 tyres replaced today as well as digital 4 wheel alignment, rear diff and wheel bearings confirmed as all ok.

Rumbling noise still there, very odd.

Lost for ideas now. Think i will just have to put up with it and see if it gets worse.

Timing belt and 2 new TPMS valves also fitted this month.

Expensive month.

On the subject of strange noises this one seems to have the garage stumped! It can be listened to here - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1de6UX0oJN4Ap51oDfcRV2okX44GNa8z_/view?usp=sharing

Anybody heard anything like this and maybe know what it is?

It starts about 25mph and is linked to road speed, not engine speed.

Edge with manual gear box.

By no means a mechanic of any sort and only taking a guess as that doesn't sound mechanical, could this be something to do with the active noise cancellation in the cabin. Having worked with active noise reduction headphones for over 10 years, you can get similar sounding issues in relation to the microphone/feedback from the speaker. Complete guess but worth a look if the sound is from the inside/speakers?

At first listen it sounded like roof bars. I take it you don't have any fitted?

I think the device is making it sound more 'digital' than it actually is. I would suspect wheel bearing or diff bearing. But wouldn't replace either until I could be sure.

Interesting, will check that out

No, no roof bars.
Not sure what device you are refering to but when I listen to the file on the google drive it is exactly the same as in real life. There was a grumbling front right bearing and that noise has stopped as that bearing has been changed but this noise is still there, but annoyingly, not all the time! Garage tells me they have checked all the bearings and can't find any issues but this noise is driving me spare. When it is in full tune it is loud enough that pedestrians are turning and looking.

Unfortunatley I seem to have very good hearing as even the radio can't drown it out.

Maybe be the driveshaft support bearing. My 2011 Mkx Failed At 54,000

That is strange. When I listen to it from this end it sounds like a didgeridoo! More like air movement than metal on metal.

Worth noting you can't always feel worn bearings on a garage ramp when they start to fail. So I wouldn't rule them out just yet.

The garage did suggest it might be what they called the intermeadiate prop shaft bearing which I am assuming is what you refer to as the driveshaft support bearing. They said the inspected it and found nothing wrong.

The annoying thing is the intemittency of it. I have driven a whole week with the car singing like a canary and right now it is mainly silent with just the occasional reminder it is still there lurking in the background.

This all started last Nov, about a month after the timing belt (etc) was changed. Thar car currently has 133000 miles on it.
