water leak into boot/spare wheel well

Featured Replies

hi again, got the dreaded water laeking into spare wheel well

cleared water out before this weekend but now after the rain its back, took out fabs to look at where lights fit, can't see any drops of water. looking on youtube seems to be fault from vents behind the bumper.

any other ideas ? got to get myself worked up to removing rear bumper, ( 5yrs ago it would have been off and done, but age has got me to less than snails pace)

pain really as guy i got car from had a towbar fitted a few months back, could have sorted the leaking sills then

took off bumper (as per youtube) can't see or feel any water onthe outside

added sealer around the vents and where the plastic corner piece is bolted on, sealer added around blackplastic of rear lights ( but can't see any holes that would allow water into the pillar,

added sealer along body seems, and around boot electric/ wiper connectors

Were these pictures taken before or after?

This vent seal will be letting water in.

they are all before

just thought i'd add some photos to help others, as most videos show focus and they have 4 vents

I've had a fiesta mk7 and now a cmax mk2 and both have leaked drivers side near the rear hatch hinge (the seam from the boot rubber seal to the roof rails)

Clear and remove as much crud as possible..clean and dry and used quality rubber black sealant..not bath sealant

  • Author

is that near the corner of the hatch ( i've put sealer there) did you have problems under the roof rails ? I was womdering if i needed tolift them and seal the roof

Yes I did lift the roof rails as the seam does go under this..I used the same sealant to stick the rails down aswell..gaffer tape to hold it down overnight till it dried

No more water leaks after for me

  • Author

thanks for that, do the roof rails just peel up or are they on clips ?

Mine were stuck down with double sided tape..

I only lifted approx 10 inches and only lifted up about an inch or 2 so not to damage or buckle the plastic..

update

still leaking had a lot of rain last night, appears to be less water coming in (only just got the car so i can only go on last couple of weeks)

already sealed the side vents (under where bumper fits), around light fittings, around electric/wiper connectors at top of the boot, sealed around where the body panels have been spot welded and sealed

too cold to apply sealer today, I will be doing the sealer in stages so i can see what makes best differance

step 1 around frame of the boot hinge

step 2 roof strips,

still got the leak

put gaffa tape over the roof trims to stop any water from there

the water appears to be coming from where the rear rubber crash pad is bolted to the back of the car, rough the area I've circled in the photo

looks like both side.need to take bumper off again

another update maybe it will help others

adding a few photos, lots of rain last night one area of concern had no water the other had a little water (maybe i didnt clean that area so well ) remember now I've put gaffa tape over the roof rails

feeling inside the space above where I think the probelm there is a hole that leads into the rear quater panel going up the side of the car

photo 1 blue indicates where hole runs up quarter panel

photo 2 where water seems be first

photo 3 gaffa taped roof rails

just a update

lots of rain only a little in the boot

as i said under that angled strengthen plate there are panel joints but I think its all interanl so no way to seal it from outside the skins

I wi take the bumper off again to see if there is a way-- just worried it is sealed frominside that traps the water between the skins--- so my idea is to drilla few holes though the floor near that joint put sealer around that dip and that should allow any water to be trapped in the boot and drain out (photo with blue markings

update

with all the fixes I've tried there is still water getting into the boot, it appears to be coming into the boot where the outer and inner skins are spot welded, I could reseal the joint but that would allow any water to stand between the outer and inner skin, so I decided to drill a vent hole each side and fill drain tubes

I used 8mm copper tubing and the top was from a sealer tube top. this gives a lip that can be sealed in place in the car and I sealed the tube to the "chassis rail"

I gave the hole in the boot a good tap to indent it hopeful this will make the drain lower than the boot area, I've added sealer around the area to hold the water until it drains

just an update, (nearly 2 weeks) had a lot of rain over night, boot looks clear of any water,

so maybe all the sealing i did externally stopped water getting into to inner body panels

could be that the water i had in the boot before i fitted the drain tubes was slow draining from previous rain from days/week before i did the sealing works
