Timing Belt

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have a 2016 Edge.

It is my understanding that it has a chain belt and also rubber belt.

The rubber belt is to be replaced after 10 years.

Mine is 10 years old this year and has done 65000 miles.

Is my understanding correct, is it due a change?

Yes, that's correct. 10 years maximum. It is due now.

Thanks for the confirmation.

Booked in for Friday. Cost £890

Out of interest, is that with the main dealer?

No, my local garage.

They know my car well.

Mine is due this year, knew when I bought the car it would need doing, contacted my local garage that I use and was quoted £550.

My partner has just had hers done for £400 cash, the guy is based in Essex he was mobile , but now works from a garage, he's also doing a nut and bolt restoration of a Mk3 RS Escort. Nice clean workshop. The cambelt service is relatively easy, around 3 hours, we were quoted £580 by the commercial garage that service our vans. Some places have massive overheads and charge accordingly, mobile mechanics are ideally suited to this job, might be worth considering this option.

£400 for 3 hours work isn't much. Parts alone cost nearly £200 including waterpump and oil/coolant. I'm surprised he can make a living charging so little.

Does he provide any warranty out of interest?

Warranty same as any other garage, Timing belt kit comprises of: timing belt, tensioner pulley, waterpump and coolant, no oil change required. retail kit is around £140 (GSF). Coolant refresh is optional, but recommended.

Did a quick search on ebay, cheapest was here:

Can't recommend, as I only use Gates/continental or OEM belts. But gives you an idea of costs, I've been around the motor trade for over 45years. I usually have access to trade prices, but ebay has killed this perk. I'll give an example: I fitted a camshaft and timing chain kit on a Peugeot partner, trade price £550, ebay direct from supplier £315 now even cheaper https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/335654198720

The problem is shifting through the cheap Chinese rubbish and Quality OEM approved Chinese parts.
