Front Parking Sensor Query.. how do they work?

Featured Replies

Hi can anyone explain how the front parking sensors work with the sync 3 (MK8 Fiesta) screen and what the P> button does in the centre console if you have it?

Reason I'm asking I bought the correct front sensors, wired up a loom and fitted the wires to the PAM in the boot ( I had previously added rear parking sensors so have the module now). To test it was working i enabled all the front parking aid options and proceeded to do some front and rear reversing, i get the diagram of the car up and coloured bars at the rear, green, amber and red however when i change to first and pull forward the rear camera goes off along with the diagram which means i get no beeping and bars on the front.

on the MK7 i have, the front and rear come on together and then go off above a certain speed, or you can press the P> button to turn them on/ off manually, obviously there's no large lcd screen so there's no diagram.

So please can someone explain to me like im stupid how the fronts should work, and what the P> button in the centre console does if i was to get one, i want to test the wiring loom and sensors before shelling out and buying the bumper retainers and 7m of extra wiring or console button, thanks.

The Mk7 should have a Park Pilot diagram if they're genuine sensors.

Did you buy the right level of PAM.

Front sensors is different to just rear

Sorry I'm asking about the MK8 one, I'll update the post 😂

I bought the PAM with sockets for front and rear sensors, I'm also going to add full auto park as well so I've actually bought the very latest module now) which arrives today hopefully. My car was available with front and rear so assumed module would be ok.

Question is how should the front parking sensors activate ? When I go from reverse to 1st and start pulling forward the diagram goes off. Also the P∆ button, does that turn them off/on. Do I need to wire that up yet for testing.

But you haven't finished the job on the Mk7 yet. 🤭

Seriously though, the front sensors should work in the same way as the Mk7. Front stay on until about 5mph. It sounds like they aren't working from your description. The button is to switch the system off for a car wash or staying sat in the car for a few mins after parking. I don't know whether the button is a requirement for the front sensors to work but would definitely try adding that if possible.

Haha MK7 is pure ford, factory fitted asbuilt on that one.

I looked at the circuit diagram and it's literally just a short circuit type switch, no fancy resistive array buttons like eco/ tcs/ start stop etc.. it's just 2 wires from module straight to the PAM.

What I find strange is usually if the sensors aren't working it would flat a DTC in the PAM for whichever sensor isn't working like RFInner open circuit so thinking about it now I'm leaning towards the module not being the correct one, usually forscan will throw up an invalid block programming error if it was incorrect and it doesn't and also the PAM has both front and rear connector on it. But facts are facts and can't be disputed, no errors, not working 😂

Without Park Pilot diagram on the dash? I didn't know that was possible. Usually Mk7 Fiestas without the diagram have dealer fitted Xtrons sensors instead of factory fitted sensors.

Do you know which part number your Mk8 module has?

HU5T-15K866-AG = no front sensors/autopark
HU5T-15K866-CH = front sensors/autopark

Ignore the MK7 thing I meant it didn't have the large 8" screen that comes on with diagram and camera like the MK8 does.

I just checked it was the AG model, the CH model has just been delivered at home so will fit and retry that tonight.

This is the centre console button I've ordered but need to changed the colours before fitting, then I can test, order the 7meters worth of cables I need to run from front to back etc. I need to order retainers for bumpers etc.

Sorry, I meant the PAM module part number. That button set is obviously for auto-parking. (Interestingly, you can also see the shadow of the word 'off' above the P, as with the stop start button.

Sorry, read my edit.. it didn't put the text in when I added the photo. Fixed the post now.

Ah that's good, hopefully the new module does the job!

Why does the AG module have the plugs for both front and rear sensors connectors if it doesn't support them? It's not like 1 plug with 20 wires and 10 wires are missing, the entire front sensor loom is a different plug completely and the socket is there.

Fingers crossed it will at least allow me to test they work so can invest in all the other bits 😆

Possibly cheaper to make just one casing for all of them? Could always open it up and see whether the front pins are actually connected to the PCB inside. I suspect they're just totally empty but am also intrigued now lol.

Yeah you could be right, 25 years ago I was a bench technician for Pioneer and they would use PCBs for different amplifiers and TVs and just not fit the components for the higher models featured but they wouldn't have left sockets in place if the device didn't have a feature but I guess on a car module it's not customer accessible so yeah I think same as you.

If I get chance at work I'll remove the old and strp it and sow a photo as I'll be replacing it when I get home anyway.

Interestingly the boards are made by Valeo who make parking sensors and 3rd party parking kits for add-ons to vehicles. There are a lot of components missing on the right hand side of the board and also from under neath but they could be for the auto park stuff hard to tell. The pins on the right hand side of the board are for the front and they are connected to those tiny little capacitors so some components seem to be there. The one on the left is for the rear, power, grounds etc.

Here's the CH version. Lots more components.20260309_175538.jpg

Fitted this morning, theres a couple of oddities you have to do to get this to work, first you need to save your asbuilt for the existing PAM AG Model (even though my car never had one) you then swap modules, load in the old asbuilt, turn off the auto park stuff ( i haven't fitted this yet ) within forscan and enable Front Park Aid in the IPC and Flank Guard in the APIM, no ones mentioned those settings before, this has now cleared the U dtc code and activated them on screen.
